Body of missing Glasgow student found on Australia’s Gold Coast

‘RIP Lewis Jack, forever 22. Love you loads’

The body of a missing Scottish student has been found on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Lewis Jack, a 22-year-old from Glasgow who was reported missing over the weekend while travelling in Australia.

His body was recovered on Tuesday evening from the waters near the Isle of Capri, close to where he was last seen in Surfers Paradise, a beachside neighbourhood on the Gold Coast in Queensland.

Local authorities believe Lewis may have accidentally fallen into the river. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Originally from Scotland, Lewis had spent Saturday night in Cavill Avenue, the centre of the Gold Coast’s nightlife. He is believed to have ordered an Uber to return to his accommodation on nearby Chevron Island, but he never arrived. CCTV footage later showed him walking along Gibraltar Drive, which runs beside the Nerang River.

Since news of his death was confirmed, tributes have been pouring in online from loved ones. His grandmother, Margaret Mooney, shared: “RIP Lewis Jack, forever 22. Love you loads.” She described her grandson simply as “beautiful.”

Friend Gemma Robertson wrote: “I can’t believe that am actually posting this. Lewis can’t believe you’re gone, the worst news, you’ll never be forgotten. Fly high.”

Another social media user added: “My heart breaks for all Lewis’s family. I wish we could wrap you all in our arms, more so I wish we could have gotten Lewis safely back to you.”

In the wake of his passing, a GoFundMe has been launched to help cover funeral expenses and bring Lewis’s body home to Scotland. At the time of writing, over £18,000 has been raised.

The fundraiser, set up by Toni-Lee Donnelly on behalf of Lewis’s family, reads: “Lewis was one of the kindest souls – his smile could light up any room, and his warmth and humour touched everyone he met. He is deeply loved and will be missed beyond words by all who knew him.

“This GoFundMe has been set up to help bring Lewis home to Scotland and support his family with the funeral costs.

“Every donation, no matter the size, means the world to us and will go directly toward repatriation and funeral arrangements.

“From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support during this incredibly difficult time.”
