If you’ve done these six things, you’re definitely ready to graduate from Exeter

Here’s a list of common Exeter Uni student experiences

As a final-year student rapidly approaching graduation (where did the time go?), I have seen my fair share of common things most people have done while attending Exeter Uni over the past three years, regardless of what course you’re on or what societies you’re a member of.

Whether you treat this like a bucket list or a nostalgic look back on your time at Exeter – this list of things, partially or in completion, will probably happen to you, or someone you know, at some point during your time here. If you haven’t experienced any of them yet – fear not, there’s still time!

1. 7-7:30pm TP entry

Bonus points for getting your timing so wrong and falling down the TP stairs before 12am. Look, I don’t blame you – if FIXR is not in your favour and FOMO is kicking in, a 7-7:30pm ticket is sometimes better than nothing. And besides, every time I’ve done it, I’ve always wanted to be in bed by midnight. It can be a good money and time-saving hack if you want to go out but also have things to do the next day. Just don’t overdo it, is my honest advice – it gets tiring pretty quickly, especially when the weather isn’t in your favour.

2. Spotting Napoleon on campus

A frequent resident of the Study Zone or the grass on Forum Hill, Napoleon might as well be the University’s official mascot at this point. It honestly makes my day whenever I encounter him on the way to or from campus, it’s like animal therapy. Napoleon’s official Instagram account currently has over six thousand followers, so I know I’m not the only one who adores the ginger campus cat so much – and I know I’m definitely going to miss him when I graduate.

3. Fighting for your life for an EGB ticket

This is something so specific to Exeter students that when I tried to explain it to my friends back home, all of whom attend different universities, they were surprised at the extent to which people went just to secure one ticket. I’m not sure what’s worse, failing to secure one or the humbling moments spent on Overheard praying you don’t get scammed. Best of luck to those still looking for their entry to the Enchanted Garden!

4. Ending up on Overheard

In fairness, I haven’t experienced this myself (that I know of, at least) – but a significant majority of my friends have. I can only imagine waking up to a public call-out of your embarrassing night in TP, or finding out someone beaned half of your street, to not be the most pleasant things to open Facebook to.

5. Post-night out Efes

Whether you’re on your way back from TP or Fever, Efes (or Efes Express near Fever) is the top spot for your cheesy chips needs. I truly wonder how much of Efes Grill’s annual revenue comes from students alone. Regardless, if it works, it works. During your time in Exeter, chances are, you too will understand the hype behind the named Turkish restaurant.

6. Leaving an assignment until the last minute

Bonus points for somehow still managing to submit it on time. We can’t all be academic weapons all the time, and sometimes the workload piles up. It’s extremely difficult to maintain a healthy routine and a social life while also working on your degree, and to that I say – we’ve been there. It gets better as you learn to manage your time in a way that works for you, but that in itself can also take time. Remember to be kind to yourself in the process!
