Iconic Edinburgh student haunt set for major revamp
‘The Tron’ is well known for it’s student deals, weekly pub quiz and lively karaoke
The Tron pub on Hunters Square is set to join the O’Neill’s chain.
Planning permission has been submitted to The City of Edinburgh Council to refurb the pub and change its external signage.
The pub is well known for it’s incredible student deals on drinks like Long Island Ice Teas and Coors Light.
It is also home to the ‘bad boy pub quiz’ on a Monday night and hosts karaoke on various days throughout the week.
It’s location near Cowgate has long made it a perfect destination for late-night revellers.
The O’Neills brand is owned by hospitality giants Mitchells and Butlers, who already owns The Tron.
The move suggests that the brand is moving away from the dive-bar style student haunt with cheap drinks and light bites and focussing on aspects more associated with Irish Pubs like live music and dining.
Locals flooded to social media to share their thoughts on the iconic pub changing it’s brand. One commenter on Reddit said: “While I realise the days of the stereotypical student pub are long gone, it does seem a bit of shame that The Tron name is disappearing, but I guess times have got to move on and I can probably see the O’Neill’s brand working at this location.”
The news comes after another popular late night spot, Boteco Do Brasil, announced it’s closure on May 3.
The Tron was recently subject to a major emergency services operation after a suspected gas leak was reported at the site.
Fire crews were seen entering the pub with gas masks on Saturday evening, the emergency services were seen leaving the scene around 7pm but the pub remained shut.
The application was recieved by the council on April 15 with the results pending.
