The Tab X Stewart Brewing: Hopping off to the local? Give Edinburgh’s award winning brewery a shot
We sat down with the team at Stewart Brewing to hear about their commitment great tasting local brews
Situated just outside Edinburgh in Loanhead (where IKEA is for those less geographically endowed) lies the tartan-clad Stewart Brewing brewery, bar and pizza restaurant.
Ran by partners and founders Steve and Jo Stewart, their brand is local first, sustainability over mass-production, and a passion for all things Scotland and Edinburgh.
It’s not just them (and us) saying their beer is something special: Stewart Brewing has won various awards including the coveted ‘Scottish Brewery of the Year’ at the Scottish Beer Awards 2024, as well as the gold for Best IPA (New Relic), Best Barrel Aged Beer (Gianduja), silver for the Best Pale Ale (Masterplan), and bronze for Best Lager (Stewart’s Lager).
Stewart’s have recently been named on the shortlist for the National Pub and Bar Awards 2025 alongside eight other venues across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
A core pillar of the brand is a commitment to sustainability, the brewery itself is now covered by 570 solar panels generating 163,152 kWh of clean energy per year.
Stewart’s is also the first craft brewery in Scotland to install carbon capture equipment in order to tackle what it describes as “one of the biggest challenges in brewing”, CO2 emissions.
Steve and Jo said: “For us, brewing has always been about innovation, quality, and community. Sustainability plays a huge role in that.
“We’re constantly looking at ways to reduce our impact, whether it’s through solar power, carbon capture, or supporting local farmers.
“The future of brewing needs to be greener, and we’re proud to be leading the way in making that a reality. At Stewart Brewing, sustainability isn’t just about what we do today, it’s about ensuring we can keep brewing great beer for generations to come.”

Over the past couple of months, The Tab has gone along to the Stewart’s ‘brew it yourself experience’, creating what may just be the greatest beer on Earth, the ‘Put it on The Tab’ hazy pale ale which went on tap in their award winning bar and pizza restaurant for customers to enjoy.
As part of the process we were met by their incredible head brewer Nathan who walked us through every step of the brewing process, from choosing our malt to adding our preferred hops.
Their beer can be found across Edinburgh, from student hot-spots like Southsider and the city’s various ‘spoons’ to the tourist hubs of the Royal Mile and Grassmarket.
Stewart beer could also be found during the Fringe Festival at their very own Stewart’s Bar in the Pleasance Courtyard with their most popular lagers, IPA’s and casks being served up by EUSA staff for thousands of festival goers.
Their session IPA remains on tap in EUSA’s Pleasance bar, with cans of various other beers available across campus including Potterrow and Peffermill.
