TikToker Rahul Rai has taken over my FYP, so here’s why he’s so controversial
There’s a lot to unpack
My For You Page has been dominated by old Rahul Rai TikToks, so here’s why everybody’s obsessed with him right now and his multiple controversies.
If you’re like me, you’ve been getting an influx of cringey TikToks about “bae” and being an elder millennial from creator Rahul Rai. He’s been making content on TikTok for years, first blowing up during the pandemic for his “relatable” relationship content.
@thefakerahulrai closest he’s ever got to a woman #fyp #viral #wehaterahulrai #rahulrai
The 35-year-old was born in India but lives in LA, and works as a content creator and actor. Some of his previous roles in old films have been going viral, including his earliest acting credit on IMDb, When Harry Tries To Marry, which came out in 2011 when he was 20 years old. He’s also played minor one-off roles in big shows like Man On The Inside and Barry.
So why is he going viral now? Well, a bunch of Rahul’s older TikToks have been reshared on the platform, first just because people were making fun of them and calling them cringey, and increasingly for behaviour some have deemed as “problematic”.
Rahul is being accused of misogyny for his ‘bae’ content
@rahulraireuploads rahul rai future bae zara #rahul #rahulrai #rahulraireuploads #lolcow #cringe
A big part of Rahul’s TikTok persona is the fictional character of “bae” – which is just him in a towel. Some of his POVs, including the “bae” character, have been going viral for the wrong reasons, like a skit he made implying women get excited over “container shopping”. People are criticising Rahul for being reductionist about what women value in a relationship, and it’s all been exacerbated by accounts re-uploading his old content.
His videos about fictional son Zayn are also getting dragged
@rahcornball Can he stop 😭😭 thank u for the video @ミミ #therealrahulrai #rahulrai #lolcow #funny #fyp
As part of Rahul’s content, he also has created an imaginary son named Zayn, who he has with the also fictional Bae. Yes, I’m confused too. In some of his Zayn videos, people have said the content is weirdly inappropriate.
In the clip above, Rahul tells Zayn not to call him “daddy”, and the whole skit is centred around a dick joke. This particular skit has been shared on Reddit and X. He’s turned off the comments on his videos but is still regularly uploading, ignoring the backlash.
