Netflix hid a shady dig at us in Black Mirror’s USS Callister: Into Infinity and we missed it
Wow, I see how it is
People on Reddit who are very much acquainted with their TV’s pause button have spotted a hidden dig at us from Netflix in the recently released Black Mirror season seven episode, USS Callister: Into Infinity.
As we know, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker is a huge fan of hiding easter eggs in plain sight. In season seven, we’ve had: The buffering in Common People, the many easter eggs of Hotel Reverie, the annoying Barnie’s versus Bernie’s conundrum, and many (many) more.
But while most of them are harmless callbacks to episodes since passed, people on Reddit have spotted a rather shady dig from Netflix – cheeky buggers.
The brief moment is in Black Mirror’s USS Callister: Into Infinity
Black Mirror’s USS Callister: Into Infinity is a continuation of the USS Callister story from back in season four. All of the cast, minus Michaela Coel, returned for the sequel, and I think it’s reasonable to say that people are now eager for a third instalment.
In the episode, the real-world Nanette Cole learns that players have been reporting people in the game without ID tags, making them illegal players. Said players turn out to be Nanette’s digital clone and the rest of the USS Callister crew after they broke away from Robert Daly’s private game and into the public domain.
Challenged to put a stop to the tagless players, the real-world version of Kabir Dudani scrolls through a bunch of complaints from players such as “Ship attacked by enemies with no tags” and “A girl fragged me on my own planet.”

But if you pause the episode at just the right time, you can spot a shady dig from Netflix – or Charlie Brooker – at the bottom of the screen.
“Stop pausing and watch the show,” reads a message from someone called Alice131013.
The post has gained a huge amount of traction on Reddit, with nearly 700 upvotes and hundreds of comments applauding Black Mirror’s fourth-wall breaks.
“Black Mirror has probably the best fourth wall-breaking meta references,” one person wrote.
“Black Mirror is always one step ahead,” another said.
A third wrote: “I have come to terms with the fact that this’ll get posted once a week for about a year, then about monthly until the end of time.”
My favourite response was simply: “Cook our asses.”
I see you, Netflix, I see you.
