We tried all the Fringe food at Edinburgh’s Pleasance Courtyard – here’s what we thought

The annual transformation of our favourite cobbled courtyard has come once again, and we’re not at all disappointed. 

We headed down to Edinburgh’s Pleasance Courtyard to get a taste for ourselves and hear what Fringe-goers think about the available food and drinks.

In no particular order, here’s what we thought about all the individual food and drink offerings.  

Mint

Mint’s warm flatbreads come with four filling options: Za’atar chicken, halloumi, chicken and halloumi, or falafel.

Each one is served with tzatziki, tomato, rocket, pickled cabbage, smoked paprika, oregano, and house herb dressing, with prices ranging from £11.50 to £13.

We had the opportunity to try the chicken and halloumi flatbread, and enjoyed the mix of flavours, and the great customer service that came with it.

This was a favourite of Edinburgh local, Rachel, as well as Kelly from New York, who were both happy with their choice of vendor.

The Happy Dumpling Co

With a choice of eight different original recipe Chinese dumplings, The Happy Dumpling Co offers a warm, comforting option for those very rare Edinburgh rainy days.

Prices range from £10.50 to £14.50 for eight dumplings with garnishing of choice: Soy sauce, chili flakes, spring onion, and crispy onion.

It also has a vegan pork and Chinese chive option for the veggies and vegans.

We sampled the pork and Chinese chive dumplings, adding soy sauce, chili crisp, and spring onions on top. We loved the customisable aspect of the toppings, with enough options to satisfy everyone. 

Mimi’s Bakehouse

If you’re searching for a hot drink, a sweet treat, or a hearty roll, Mimi’s Bakehouse is the stall for you.

As seen in its very popular stores all over Edinburgh, it has a selection of tray bakes and cupcakes topped with the perfect not-too-sweet buttercream.

For a more filling alternative, it also offers hot rolls that come with a selection of eight fillings, including veggie haggis and a tattie scone.

Back to Beef

Another fringe-goer favourite, Back to Beef offers four different “smash and stack'” burgers, topped with homemade burger sauce, caramelised onion and pickles, all served on a sesame pretzel bun.

Connor, a 26-year-old from Manchester, described the vegan burger as “fantastic” and a “good vegan alternative”.

Its truffle and parmesan fries were another stapke that we had the pleasure of trying.

Total Meltdown (Grilled Cheese Co)

The Grilled Cheese Company offers a variety of toasties to tickle your tastebuds, with thirteen non-vegan options and seven vegan options.

Prices range from £6 to £12, with the sweet Nutella and strawberry toastie costing £10.

We spoke to Emily, 24, who had the mature cheddar toastie and told us it was a “great choice.”

Pizza Geeks

Last but in no way least, Pizza Geeks offers Neopolitan-inspired pizzas.

We saw many fringe-goers with a slice in hand, with Connor from Belfast telling us the pepperoni pizza he purchased was “pretty good” alongside the mac and cheese bites.

With a variety of food stalls and bars, Pleasance Courtyard offers a great post-performance pick me up.

Lively, but also a haven away from the busy crowds, the food and drinks vendors are just a six minute walk away from the Royal Mile and ten minutes from George Square.
