All Bournemouth University students to have compulsory surfing lessons from September 2025
An email obtained by The Bournemouth Tab detailed the new programme
All Bournemouth University students will have to take compulsory surfing lessons from September 2025.
This move by the university, called the Student-Surf Programme, aims to help students acclimatise to seaside living.
In an email obtained by The Bournemouth Tab, the university confirmed to staff that all students enrolled at the institution next academic year will have to take part.
The lessons will run from 1st September to 31st October, with students needing to sign up to at least four sessions in this time period.
According to the email, lessons will take place on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9am to 5pm.
It was confirmed that lessons will be weather-dependant, and students who cannot or are unable to swim are able to contact their personal tutor to be excused from taking part.
According to the email, if a lesson is cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, the students involved must attend the following session.
The university also explained that students who do not attend their lessons, unless for reasons discussed with their personal tutors, will be disciplined.
Celia, a first year student from Birmingham, who is studying English at Bournemouth University, said: “This sounds so fun. As someone from The Midlands, we don’t really get a chance to take part in activities like this, so I’m really looking forward to the sessions.”
Tyler, a final year student, added: “Thank the sea gods that I’m finishing this year. I get my hair permed all the time so getting wet is something that would ruin my look.”
