Want to be a journalist? The Bournemouth Tab is hiring new editors for next academic year

We’re hiring for Editor in Chief, News Editor, and TikTok Editor

The Bournemouth Tab is hiring new editors for next academic year!

The roles of Editor in Chief, News Editor, and TikTok Editor are available, with our current Features Editor and Social Media Editor staying on for another year.

Students at any Bournemouth university are encouraged to apply, from any course and year of study. The only requirement is that you have the passion and energy for life in Bournemouth and student-led journalism.

Being an editor for The Bournemouth Tab is fantastic for your CV. It opens up loads of opportunities for you and also lets you meet new people so it’ll not only boost your resume but your social circle too.

You’ll also get opportunities to write for the national site, The Tab, which is read by more than nine million readers each month.

Editors are also invited to London twice yearly to meet the national writers, have training, and occasionally get a free curry. What more could you want?

The roles are perfect for anyone looking to pursue a career in writing, journalism, social media or marketing. No experience is necessary, and the skills you gain are invaluable.

If you are a fun, driven person looking to get involved with student-orientated journalism, one of these roles is surely perfect for you.

Editor in Chief

As Editor in Chief you’ll work to oversee the entire team of writers and lead the direction of our coverage.

You should be prepared to write your own pieces throughout the year and help the team in breaking the biggest stories on campus. You will also be in charge of ensuring all content, both written and social, is consistent with The Bournemouth Tab’s standard of quality and tone of voice.

You’ll also be the main link to The Tab HQ and be supported by HQ who will help in running The Bournemouth Tab team.

The role is incredibly rewarding and a great experience to have in leading a large team in a fast-paced and exciting environment. To fit this role you should be friendly and supportive to new and existing writers, thorough in editing articles and have a keen eye for the stories that will make an impact and hit a chord with students across campus.

Having experience as an Editor in Chief at a publication with thousands of reads per article grants you the experience to connect directly with the industry of writing and journalism, as well as develop leadership skills along the way.

News Editor

You’ll be responsible for making sure The Bournemouth Tab continues to chase the biggest and most exciting scoops across all local campuses.

This role often involves needing to react to fast-paced and changing stories as they develop on the day. You need to be able to sniff out a good story when you see one. You will also need to contact organisations and people for comment, as well as fact check and provide sources.

Employers generally love news roles – they prove you’re quick under pressure, attentive and sharp. Above all, you will hold the responsibility to bring important news stories to audiences around all the Bournemouth unis – making a difference and providing stories to the public.

You’ll work alongside the Editor-in-Chief to write weekly and edit articles.

You’ll be working on stories just like these:

Bournemouth University suspends undergraduate English and politics courses

Bournemouth student needed screws in his face after an ‘extremely drunk’ teen attacked him

Inquest opens into the death of a university student in Bournemouth

TikTok Editor

You’ll be working with the Social Media Editor and the other section editors to promote The Bournemouth Tab’s content on TikTok.

TikTok is the social media platform we most want to see grow at The Bournemouth Tab so we’re looking for someone who has a solid grasp of meme culture, and wants to make lots of fun and creative videos.

You should love being in front of the camera, as you will be expected to present some of the news articles we publish. Don’t worry if you’re not used to writing scripts for TikTok videos or even presenting on screen, as our Assistant Editor from HQ is a broadcast journalist by trade, so she’ll be able to help you as and when you need.

You can apply via the form below.

Applications are open until Monday 1st April 23:59.
