Bournemouth student and Paralympic gold medallist sets sights on LA

The 21-year-old is making waves in the swimming community

Paralympic gold medallist, Leo McCrea has confirmed that he has set his sights on the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

Leo, who is a 21-year-old Bournemouth University student from Poole, spoke to Buzz about his ambitions and goals for the next Paralympics.

He said: “LA is definitely on the cards; I am only 21 so hopefully it will be my next big thing. I want to defend my title out there.”

Leo’s career started at Poole Swimming Club after being spotted by Team GB Paralympic legend Ellie Simmonds’ mother at the age of six.

His training takes place in several locations across Dorset, including Bournemouth Collegiate School, David Lloyd, and Bournemouth University.

Leo, who represents Switzerland, was awarded a scholarship at Bournemouth University through the Sport’s BU High-Performance Sport Programme.

The scholarship includes a gym membership, chiropractic treatment, sports massages and strength and conditioning training, where he is trained by Bournemouth University’s coaches Dan Boer and Ben Kaiser.

Following Leo’s gold medal win in France, Ben said: “I’m proud of how he’s done. It’s a testament to all the hard work he’s put in this year.”

Leo is an SB5 100m breaststroke swimmer who hopes to break the world record in his category with the British Swimming Championships approaching in April, and the Singapore Para Swimming Championship in September.

When asked about how he’s feeling regarding the next games, Leo explained: “I’m feeling alright about it, once I get back up to fitness and start my normal training regime can start preparing.”
