Bournemouth University introduces free menstrual products across campus

Bournemouth University has introduced a new initiative to provide free menstrual products across most of its campus buildings, making tampons and pads available to all students.

The dispensers are located in bathrooms and communal areas on both the Lansdowne and Talbot campuses, with products available on the first and ground floors of most buildings.

This new service aims to support students by ensuring they have access to essential menstrual products without financial worries, especially in light of the rising cost of living.

The initiative highlights the university’s commitment to student welfare and gender equality, addressing the growing issue of period poverty that affects many young people.

National research consistently shows the impact of period poverty on education, with a YouGov poll from May 2023 revealing that 13% of individuals have missed out on education due to a lack of access to menstrual products.

By offering these free products, Bournemouth University aims to remove this barrier and ensure all students can attend classes and engage in university life without the added burden of menstruation-related costs.

The move is part of Bournemouth University’s broader efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for students, where everyone can thrive regardless of personal circumstances.

The University has chosen period products that are not only better for students but also more sustainable for the environment.

Students are encouraged to take only what they need, ensuring that the products are available for others who may also be in need.

The initiative was launched by Fatima Farha, the Vice President of Welfare and Community, in partnership with BU Estates.
