Demon dolls to 24k gold: The most bizzare Labubu moments of 2025 so far

It’s been a Labubu girl summer

Labubus have absolutely dominated the year so far, and they’re not slowing down. Love them or hate them, the collectible dolls have  a chokehold on millions of people around the world. The amount of scandals surrounding these innocent-seeming creatures is wild – here are some of the highlights.

Labubu-mania hit national news earlier this year when people started queuing for hours for the dolls – some even camping overnight. There were physical fights over Labubus,  and some reports even say Popmart staff members got involved. It got so bad that the collectibles shop had to stop selling Labubus in the UK for a while, which only made them more popular.

In June, Liz Bullz dropped one of the most popular TikToks of the year.

“I have the one and only 24 karat gold Labubu,” she said, holding up the atrocity.

She claimed the Labubu was made of melted gold bars, weighed 200g and cost her £20,000. When the video first dropped, loads of people didn’t catch the satire and actually believed Liz Bullz had dropped two grand on a Labubu, which only made the video go more viral. It now has over 60 million views.

Is it even a viral trend if there’s no satanic panic? After Labubus skyrocketed to fame, people started theorising that they had demonic roots. They compared the names Labubu to Pazuzu, a demon from Babylonian mythology. An image comparing the two creatures spread fast across social media. Some people, especially parents, were genuinely concerned, while others poked fun at the reach made to connect the two.

According to the owner, Labubu dolls are actually based on Nordic folklore, so no need to chuck your collection.

KSI Labubu goes horribly wrong

Liz Bullz had another viral Labubu video, but this time for all the wrong reasons. Her customised KSI Labubu doll was controversial, as many people compared it to blackface. The now deleted video shows Liz holding a Labubu doll with its face painted black, wrapped up in a red bandana. Liz said that she paid £100k for the doll, but this time the joke didn’t land. She apologised for the video and said she was never taught about blackface and didn’t know its implications.

KSI reacted to the video, saying that what annoyed him about it was the size of his forehead.

Earlier this month, three people in masks were caught breaking into a store in California, and leaving with arms full of Labubus. One Stop Sales had only been open for two months when the Labubu heist happened. A clip of the CCTV footage blew up, gaining over a million likes on TikTok, but it’s not even the biggest Labubu heist to date. When a home in California was raided, police discovered £30k worth of the dolls, which were ready to be re-sold on the black market. The chaos never ends.
