Inquest opens into the death of a university student in Bournemouth

A 22-year-old university student was found dead in his accommodation with the cause unknown


An inquest has opened into the death of a university student in Bournemouth.

22-year-old, Guy Drew Shepherd, was confirmed dead in his accommodation after emergency services were called to reports of an unresponsive male in Winton.

The Daily Echo confirmed that the area coroner for Dorset, Brendan Allen, opened the inquest into his death at Bournemouth Town Hall on 23rd January 2025.

Coroner’s officer, Sarah Harrison, told Dorset Coroner’s Court that Mr Shepherd was born in Bedford on 18th September 2002.

His registered address was Victoria Road in Gloucester, and he was a student by occupation.

On 17th January 2025, police and paramedics were called to Hector’s House on Wimborne Road in Bournemouth after reports of an unresponsive male.

Officers found the death not to be suspicious, and Mr Shepherd was confirmed dead at the scene.

A postmortem examination was done on 21st January 2025.

The cause of death has yet to be confirmed and the doctors are currently waiting the outcome of the samples, however Mr Shepherd’s death is suspected to be unnatural.

Mr Allen adjourned the hearing for a full inquest on 11th August at 10am with statements requested from his family, GP, police and mental health team if he was known to them.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “We received a report at 2.21pm on Friday 17 January 2025 that a man aged in his 20s had been found deceased at an address in Wimborne Road in Bournemouth.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and the man’s family has been informed.

“Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”
