Everything the underrated mum from Adolescence has said about the Netflix hit show

Christine Tremarco’s unreal performance isn’t getting raved about enough

With a show as successful and as stacked as Adolescence on Netflix, it’s hard to know where to begin when praising it. The show has broken viewing records, it’s the number one show in over 70 countries and it has 100 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes. Stephen Graham as both writer, star and producer knocked it out the park with his fellow writer Jack Thorne. People can’t shut up about Philip Barantini and his signature four one shot take episodes – with good reason. Ashley Walters said the show reignited his passion for his career. Erin Doherty had one episode and proved why she is one of the UK’s brightest talents. Owen Cooper had never acted before and is an absolute breakout star. Then there’s Christine Tremarco, who turns in one of the most understated, gut punching performances in Adolescence on Netflix and dare I say, she’s underrated.

Here’s everything Christine Tremarco has said about Adolescence on Netflix and the show’s runaway success, after her blinding performance as Jamie’s mum Manda in the show.

‘I cried reading that script’

Earlier this week, Christine Tremarco popped in to have a chat with Lorraine about the show’s insane success. When Lorraine asked her if the team behind Adolescence knew it would be such a huge hit for Netflix, Tremarco said “Not to this level. I knew it was good from as soon as I read the script. And I cried reading that script. But I don’t think any of us expected it to reach the level that it has – and open up the discussions that it has.”

She also dived into how great the crew and the cast were and how much working together really strengthened the success of the show. On Stephen Graham and working with him again – she explained how the two have been friends for years “and he just raises you higher as an actor.”

She also said that prior to getting the script she’d never even heard about incel culture, and that it’s terrifying how this subculture of the internet could have such an impact on men behind the scenes.

She’s found it extremely difficult to watch back

When Christine Tremarco went onto BBC to discuss the show, and the channel played a clip, presenter Charlie said “Christine, you were averting your eyes when we were showing it on the monitors just a minute ago. Were you doing that deliberately? Do you not like watching yourself back?”

She confirmed that she doesn’t particularly watch her own performances back anyway, and that Christine Tremarco finds watching Adolescence on Netflix extremely emotionally turbulent and charged. No, not really. I mean, when I watched Adolescence, and I’ve watched it twice, I cried. Even though, you’re in it. Just, the whole story and Owen’s performance, everyone’s performance,” Christine explained to Nina and Charlie from BBC Breakfast.
