Adolescence actress says she was ‘genuinely scared’ on set during this incredible scene

She forgot they were acting for a minute

Adolescence is the biggest thing on Netflix right now, and one of the actresses has opened up about a moment she was “genuinely scared” on set.

The clever crime drama is about a 13-year-old boy called Jamie Miller, who is arrested for murdering a schoolmate, and every episode was shot in one take.

One of the most impressive parts is episode three when the young teen speaks to the psychologist for 50 whole minutes uninterrupted.

Erin Doherty, who plays the psychologist Briony Ariston, has revealed she was actually terrified during the part where Jamie lashed out at her.

Speaking to Variety, she said watching him go from “childlike innocence to anger” was “genuinely scary”.

“It’s every actor’s dream to get to a place where you forget yourself and you are in this strange reality that you’ve created,” the actress explained.

“It sounds bizarre, but you genuinely do believe it in the moment. If the person opposite you is doing their job and you’re doing yours.”

“You both created this other place, and we were lucky enough to get there together.”

Erin praised 15-year-old Owen Cooper for playing the character of Jamie with “such skill” and making it so you “genuinely did feel for him”.

“I’m so proud of Owen because I got to see him push himself as an actor, to really go there,” she added.

“Back then, he was this kid and he didn’t want to be this scary thing, especially with someone he just met. So we really had to work on creating this safe space to let him know that he’s going to be fine.”

“To think about that kid versus the one that turned up in that 11th take, and push those buttons and pushed himself, I’m just so proud.”

The psychologist episode had to be filmed 11 times in total, and it was the 11th take that they ended up using in the show, so it took a long time to get right.
