Nottingham has been deemed the least sports-obsessed city in the UK.
A study conducted by Betsson examined search trends across all major sports; football, rugby, basketball, tennis, cricket and golf, to reveal which cities were most passionate about sport, with Nottingham taking 90th place overall.
To carry out this study, Betsson used key works relating to popular sports like football, rugby, cricket, tennis, and basketball for the 90 most populated cities in the UK. By using Google’s key words planner, the company could see the number of searches for each sport.
The results were calculated to reflect searches per 10,000 people for consistent comparison.
Newcastle topped the charts, followed by St Helens and Rotherham. Birmingham, falling just inside the top 10, is supposedly home to the nation’s biggest rugby fans whilst Nottingham fell short of the mark with results coming in at, a disappointing, last place.
Nottingham is home to some incredible facilities with the Motorpoint Arena for ice hockey, David Ross Sports Village is used for training by Olympians such as Emily Campbell and three stadiums dedicated to football and cricket are all popular landmarks in the city.
So, it’s clear Nottingham has the foundations for a vibrant sporting community but is lacking its passion, according to the research.
Nottingham boasts two successful football teams and a historic cricketing legacy which was shown in the 159,250 searches related to football, cricket wasn’t so prominent with 73.29 searches per 10,000 residents.
Despite this, Nottingham appears to be lacking its passion for rugby, basketball and golf with a combined search total of just 2.89. The total sports obsession score given to Nottingham was a mere 0.81/10.
