What happened to ‘Black Widower’ Malcolm Webster from Netflix’s Married to a Psychopath?

He planned to murder three different wives

Channel 4’s Married to a Psychopath, the devastating story of Malcolm Webster’s violent crimes, has been steadily climbing the Netflix chart since it was released.

The two-part documentary is centred around detective Charles Henry who used his spare time to “hunt down and bring Malcolm Webster – a ruthless killer who targeted wealthy women – to justice.”

Spoiler alert from this point, come back after you’ve watched if you don’t want the show spoiled!

1994 marked the year that nurse Malcolm Webster murdered his wife Claire Morris just eight months after they tied the knot. He had stolen medication from his job, which he used to drug Claire before deliberately crashing his car. Because he set the car alight, police determined that it was a horrible accident.

Fast forward to 1997, Malcolm married his second wife Felicity Drumm in New Zealand and proceeded to make several attempts on her life to cash in on seven fraudulent life insurance policies. He fled the country upon being caught and turned to his next target, Simone Banarjee.

After lying that he had a terminal illness, Simone left everything to him in her will. However, this time his plans were foiled when police issued an Osman warning and she discovered her life jacket had been punctured during a boat trip.

Over the years, many other women have come forward with stories about their own experiences with the Black Widower.

Where is Malcolm Webster from Netflix’s Married to a Psychopath now?

In 2009, Malcolm Webster was formally charged with the murder of his first wife Claire Morris, the attempted murder of his second wife Felicity Drumm, and attempting to enter a bigamous marriage with hopeful third wife Simone Banarjee. Over the next few years, he was found guilty of murder, attempted murder, fraud, theft and attempted bigamy.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 2011, being told that his “utterly appalling” crimes would mean he served at least 30 before he could apply for parole.

“Webster was a calculating criminal who wove a web of lies and deceit around people who entered his life in good faith. He took careful steps to cover up his crimes, including using specialist medical knowledge gained through his career as a nurse,” Lindsey Miller, the head of the serious and organised crime division at the Crown Office, said at the time.

Despite appealing the convictions several times, Malcolm Webster is still behind bars. He will be able to apply for parole in 2041.

If you find yourself still wanting more information about Malcolm Webster, you might consider watching ITV’s The Widower which is based on his horrible crimes.
