Five budget friendly things to do in winter as a Nottingham student
Being a student in an expensive city like Nottingham is difficult but fear not as here are our favourite budget friendly seasonal activities
Navigating student life in a fairly expensive city like Nottingham can be a challenge, but enjoying yourself doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are our top picks for some budget-friendly seasonal activities that let you make the most of the city without overspending.
Explore Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland
Not to state the obvious but there is a Christmas market in Notts. Before you start thinking about saving your pennies for a trip to Winter Wonderland, let’s remember that the vibes alone will get you into the festive spirit.
Free entry to Nottingham Winter Wonderland lets you explore market stalls as well as enjoying live performances throughout the day adding an extra touch of holiday cheer to your visit.
If you do feel like spending some pennies just get some churros or a festive drink to walk around with.
Visit Nottingham Contemporary
Starting off strong, Nottingham Contemporary is one of the largest contemporary art galleries in the UK with free entry. It also has film screenings from six pounds, so if you don’t want to stare at art for hours you can stare at a screen instead.
To get more into the festive spirit, it holds craft fairs with small businesses selling homemade gifts, decorations, and seasonal treats. Great for when you’re stuck on what to get your loved ones.

I’m sure everyone ran over from campus when it snowed to have the biggest snowball fight possible. The café has excellent hot chocolates that are perfect for these cold days, and great to accompany you on a walk through the grounds.
Another option is to go in the house and have a look around – they have loads of rooms with really interesting exhibits in and its free to enter.
Baking with friends
As wonderful and lively as Rock City can be, sometimes it’s just as nice to spend the night in. And by night in, I really mean a cozy night in.
Why not have a baking night with your flatmates or friends where you make seasonal treats like gingerbread cookies or brownies, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows on the side? Sounds like a perfect way to spend an evening if you ask me.
Whatever you decide to spend your winter doing, I hope it’s a season filled with warmth, comfort, and a low cost. I also hope that this list has left you somewhat hopeful you don’t have to break the bank to have fun as a student in Notts.
Student cinema nights
In honour of this year having a great lineup of films to watch, why not treat yourself to an evening at the cinema?
Whether you wanted to see Wicked (be prepared to hold space) or wanted to see Gladiator II, there are multiple cinemas in and around Nottingham that have some great deals on offer.
Every Lenton resident knows about the Savoy Cinema with £5 tickets and Beeston has the Arc Cinema with tickets from £7.50. Cineworld in town also has student tickets but there’s nothing like cuddling up on your sofa to watch a film – so there’s something for everyone.
