Nottingham students evacuated after a fire at a city centre block of flats
No one was reported to be injured
Nottingham students were evacuated from a city centre block of flats after a fire started there.
At 10:30am on Saturday 14th September, firefighters tackled the blaze on Howard Street, located behind the Victoria Centre.
The fire was reported to have started on the upper floor of the Howard One student accommodation but was soon put out by five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform that drops water from a height.
Although the fire was extinguished in a short period of time, firefighters stayed at the scene to confirm that the structure was safe, Nottingham Post reports.
Dozens of students were evacuated despite some just recently moving into the new Howard One accommodation. No one was reported to have been injured.
A third year student at Nottingham Trent University, Elliot Mead, 20, said at the scene: “We haven’t been told much but from I heard it’s probably caused a lot of damage, you see bits falling on the bottom floor.
“Most people have only just back and now we don’t know when we’ll be let back in.”
The cause of the fire is yet to be identified.
