A guide to all the gigs in Nottingham in this December

Nottingham is a city that is not limited in its music venues; from the intimate Bodega to the Motorpoint arena, there is somewhere and someone for everyone. Before we all leave Nottingham for our Christmas break, treat yourself to a night out that is worlds better than a Ocean club night (no offence to Ocean lovers). This is a list of just some of the gigs happening this month; pop, classic hip-hop and psychedelic rock, Nottingham has it all. We’ve even got something to accomodate for this festive period so dont miss out!

Ashnikko – 5^th December, Rock City   

US rapper and singer, Ashnikko blessed us with their presence last night at Rock City. With a sound that the artist themself cannot narrow into a genre, Ashnikko is a fusion of bubblegum pop, punk, and indie rock. Their latest album ‘Weedkiller’ is an extended allegory commenting of climate change and the evolution of technology, and the artist has taken concert goers on a journey into a dystopian wasteland since the beginning of the debut album tour in September. Whatever that means, we are here for it!

Last night was nothing less than a full-fledged show pushing the boundaries of gender expression and much more, from the electric cyberpunk princess Ashnikko!

Madness – 5th December, Motorpoint Arena

Born and bred in Camden Town, this English ska and pop band was a prominent band of the late 70s and early 80s and has been renowned as one of the most successful British bands of all time. With infectious tunes and bouncy rhythms, Madness has also tackled somewhat real issues such as terminal illness and animal testing in their lyrics. Now Madness is back on their 2023 UK “C’est La Vie” tour, where they bring back sing-along bangers that we all know and love, including ‘Our House’ and ‘It Must Be Love’ (love, love). Their set last night was absolute Madness.

The Muppets Christmas Carol Live – 7th December, Royal Concert Hall

It would be criminal to not include a festive event in this line up – tis’ the season after all. For Christmas lovers, this retelling of the classic Charles Dickens tale has won the hearts of many as one of the best Christmas film ever, and yes, I am biased. Get cosy in the Royal Concert Hall and enjoy the film accompanied by a live orchestra to really get you in the holiday mood. Dont be a Scrooge, get your tickets here.

The Charlatans – 10^th December, Rock City

Over 30 years since their debut album ‘Some Friendly’ released, the early 90’s British indie-rock band is back on tour. With a classic sound that participated to the Britpop movement, The Charlatans’ music will transport you back to the 90’s; a smoky room with electrifying acoustics. Rock City is hosting this powerhouse band and currently tickets are sold out, but you can sign up for the waitlist here.

Ice Cube – 12^th December, Motorpoint Arena

This is not a drill. Arguably one of the most ionic rappers of the 90’s, Ice Cube is coming to Nottingham; a sentence I never thought I would write.  A classic hip-hop discography that has been praised for its unapologetic sociopolitical commentary on Los Angeles and black culture, Ice Cube is a performer not to be missed. Ice Cube will be performing at the great Motorpoint Arena, a fitting venue for one of the founding fathers of 90’s gangsta rap. Fleetwood Bac – 21^st December @ Rescue Rooms

The world’s first and most authentic Fleetwood Mac tribute is coming to Nottingham! Fleetwood Bac, endorsed by the original Mick Fleetwood (!!!) is bringing back the 70’s sound, which has been described as psychedelic blues rock. If you’re a sucker for the classics or just love music that is all about good vibes only, then this is the tribute band for you. Who wouldn’t love screaming all the words to the iconic ‘Everywhere’ on a Thursday night at Rescue Rooms – sounds like the perfect night to me. Grab your tickets here.

Mooch Live

And finally, for a cheap and cheerful evening, Mooch Live every Thursday is the place to be. The newly refurbished Mooch bar does not disappoint; listen to some incredible covers and originals by our very own students while enjoying a game of pool or darts. Mooch Live will be running till the 14^th of December so don’t miss out
