Cardiff University architecture student wins ‘National Women in Property’ award

Sophie competed for nine months against 122 students across the UK

Cardiff University student has won the 2024 Women in Property National Student Award, after competing against 12 other students in the final from across the UK.

Sophie Page, who is about to enter her third year of studying for her BSc degree in architecture was announced the winner of the Women in Property National Student Award on the 19th September.

The awards have been held annually for the past 18 years to promote women studying environmental degrees.

According to Women in Property, the organisation believes that “success and its rewards should be founded on merit and expertise, rather than gender.”

The nine month process for the awards starts with universities being asked to nominate students who are in their second year of study. The students then go before a judging panel where they showcase a piece of coursework as well as their potential, personal skills, and understanding of the industry.

Once beyond the nominee stage, they are put forward for the national final where they are challenged on topical industry issues. This year 122 students were nominated to represent 55 universities.

All participants of the award are given a free membership to the Women in Property Association, which has an acclaimed mentoring scheme and access to huge companies such as Savills, Amazon, and TP Bennett.

The winner also receives a prize of £1,000 and a trophy, alongside a membership with the organisation.

According to Business News Wales, the judges for the award were “blown away by Sophie’s views on sustainability, telling us we all need to adjust our comfort levels” and felt that they had been “educated after the interview.”

Sophie said that the experience was both “incredibly exciting and rewarding in countless ways.”

Adding that she is looking “forward to remaining an active part of this wonderful organisation, which continues to uplift and empower women in the industry.”

Jennifer Winyard, the National Chair of Women in Property and Senior Strategic Land Manager at Barratt Homes, said: “What a fabulous outcome for Sophie, who was up against an amazing, talented group of women for the final stage of this nine-month process.

“This year I have talked a lot about unlocking one’s potential, recognising our own skills and developing our capabilities, none more so than through the National Student Awards programme.  I am delighted for all our finalists and, in particular, for Sophie who excelled.

“These women will be a credit to our industry, and we would like to thank them all for their hard work and professionalism.”

Universities are being asked now to nominate their top female students for the first round in the judging process for 2025.
