‘Operation Windrunner’: Police tackle student bike theft at Nottingham University

The police gained important intelligence for future operations

Last month, police patrolled a University of Nottingham campus to crack down on bike crime.

Police launched Operation Windrunner with the aim to tackle bike theft on campus. University policing officers and the City Central neighbourhood policing team looked out for potential criminals last month.

The operation deployed police on Jubilee Campus to catch thieves in the act. Plain clothes officers patrolled on foot or in unmarked vehicles, while uniformed officers waited nearby.

Meanwhile, the University of Nottingham police team worked with campus security. They reported any sightings on CCTV to the team on the ground.

The operation aims to address a rise in reports of bike theft, which is mainly targeting the student population.

Although they made no arrests, the police gained important intelligence. They will carry out further operations to catch criminals.

PC Lewis Bullmore, from the City Central neighbourhood policing team, said: “Through this operation, we are sending out a clear message to offenders that we’re out there and will clamp down on any illegal activity.

“We have a huge population of students that call Nottingham their home, and we hope this work demonstrates how we are listening and responding to their concerns.”

PC Nick Lewis, from the University of Nottingham’s policing team, said: “Our role isn’t just about policing—it’s about listening and working alongside young people to help them thrive, both on and off campus.”

He also offered precautions to students using bikes: “We always recommend using a strong D lock, which secures both the frame and wheels, and choosing well lit, busy areas or designated racks.”

“Registering your bike with the National Bike Registration Database also helps us trace your bike back to you if it’s stolen.”

“If your bike is stolen or you have any concerns about crime in your area, we’d always encourage you to report it to us.”

The University of Nottingham policing team aim to ensure the safety of students and build trust in the community.
