This teacher called the police after a kid stole her Hello Kitty Funko Pop and it’s wild
‘Yes, it IS that serious!’
A Texas high school teacher’s TikTok series has caused some intense debate about student accountability and teacher boundaries after she reported her class to the police over a stolen collectible figure. The object of the theft? The teacher’s Hello Kitty Funkopop, which was a limited-edition sentimental gift from a former student, that had been sitting on her desk for years.

The teacher, who goes by @_d3thateacher on TikTok, explained that the rare vinyl figure, valued at roughly $300 (£223), was special to her. In an emotional TikTok post that has now had over 14 million views, she described how deeply the theft hurt her: “It’s not just a toy, it’s a memory. And someone took that from me.”
The teacher’s frustration quickly turned to feelings of betrayal, particularly as she had gone out of her way to help her students. One even donated a Funko Pop from their own collection in a gesture to make things right. But despite her attempts to resolve the issue quietly, including offering students a chance to return the item “no questions asked”, the Hello Kitty figure remained missing.

After several days of no resolution, even with a substitute teacher reminding the class, the teacher said she was left with no choice but to file a police report.

In one of her TikToks, she shared: “I told them to just have integrity and put it back on my desk while I was away, but it was nowhere to be found. I can’t even feel safe in my classroom anymore.”
Reactions online have been divided. Some people called the police report an overreaction for what they saw as a minor theft, while others supported the teacher’s decision, emphasising the importance of holding students accountable for their actions.
One person wrote on TikTok: “It’s not the Funko Pop. It’s the principle. If kids think it’s okay to steal from teachers, what comes next?”
The teacher herself has reiterated this point, saying her decision wasn’t about revenge but about upholding respect and integrity.
“It’s about boundaries,” she explained. “It’s about setting an example that theft and dishonesty have consequences.”

The teacher’s experience has resonated with many educators, especially on Reddit, where numerous teachers have shared similar stories of stolen items, vandalised classrooms, and a general erosion of respect in schools. Some teachers described a troubling trend of students testing limits with no fear of consequences.
One teacher commented: “When I was in school, nobody talked back to teachers. Now the nice kids treat us like friends, and the others walk all over us.”
Another shared their own frustrations: “In just one decade, over a dozen teachers at my school have been assaulted.”
The debate continues: Was the teacher justified in calling the police, or was it an overstep? As it stands, the Funkopop still has not been replaced, and the police report is still ongoing.
