The five worst things EA has done to The Sims 4 that have basically ruined the game

It’s been a long 10 years

It’s just over ten years since The Sims 4 came out, and let’s just say it’s been a chaotic journey. From broken DLC, to selling out to rich investors, here are the worst things EA has ever done to The Sims 4.

Making the base game basically unplayable

Playing The Sims 4 base game is the most dull experience ever – and that’s even with it being free now. Besides starting a Sims family, really basic build and buy options and a few random community lots, there’s basically nothing to do. Back in the day, base game included way more career options, customisation and story building for your Sims. Even the option for weather is behind a paywall. EA’s greed never stops surprising me.

Selling out – literally

EA’s latest flop move comes from an unlikely sell. The company has been bought by a Saudi Arabian private equity firm, and an American firm with ties to the Trump family, for $55 billion. The historically queer-friendly game being bought out by potentially very conservative stakeholders is just really not a good look, and makes the future of the Sims franchise feel even more bleak.

All the countless broken expansion packs

On top of the £40 most of us paid to play The Sims 4, a full price expansion pack sets you back another £30. So the least they could do is actually work. But if you’ve played Dine Out and had to wait six hours for a waiter to bring out your starter, or just the entirety of Wedding Stories, you know functional gameplay isn’t a given for expansion packs. EA, please fix your game.

Over £1k+ worth of DLC content

Talking about the price of expansion packs, why is there so much DLC? If you want to have a full Sims 4 experience, with all the extra content, it’ll cost you at least a grand. Over the years, EA have released over 100 expansion packs, game packs, stuff packs and kits. Even waiting for a sale doesn’t make all this extra stuff worth it.

Never listening to what the community actually wants

We should’ve known The Sims 4 would be doomed when we were begging for more interesting family gameplay in 2020 and instead we got a Star Wars pack. EA’s biggest sin is their consistent choice to ignore basically everything Sims players want. Instead of improving the game by adding things we’ve all been begging for for over a decade now, they just keep piling more DLC on top of this very broken game, because they know people will buy it anyways.

Well, at least we’ll always have the first three games.
