Preacher from the ‘One Margarita’ TikTok says she’s a gay icon, but I’m not buying it
People are saying she’s having a ‘redemption arc’
Two years after she created the viral “One Margarita” TikTok sound, Sister Cindy is back – and she’s calling herself a gay icon.
Cindy Smock, known online as Sister Cindy, travels across campuses in America, preaching her extremely conservative Christian beliefs. Her most viral moment was when she criticised women who party and drink alcohol, saying, “If you buy her one margarita, she will spread her legs!”

TikToker ThatChickAngel talked about the original clip on her podcast, and then made a remix inspired by the preaching, which now has millions of streams on Spotify.
The preacher is now back at it again with a new message in a recently shared TikTok video. Talking to students at the University of Toledo in Ohio, she addresses her problematic relationship with the LGBTQ+ community.

“Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m a gay icon, if you haven’t heard,” she said.
The crowd started cheering and laughing as she continued to speak.
“I have no idea how it happened. I faithfully bashed gays for four decades, and they fell in love with me, and they made me an icon!”
She continued: “I love the gays back, because the gays have taught us that love is love, but lust is lust.”
People were shocked to hear Sister Cindy say such seemingly supportive things after years of saying problematic things about the LGGBTQ+ community. She once told a college campus, “If you’re gay, you need Sister Cindy to pray the gay away”, and in a video with a supporter she said being gay is a choice, “turn or burn”.
Some of the comments on the video are sarcastically praising her, but quite a few people seem to think she’s turned a new, progressive leaf.

“The fact she evolved to acceptance is amazing,” one comment with over 100k likes said.
“Sister Cindy redemption arc in my for you page in 2025 is not whatI expected,” said another.
But don’t get too excited. Sister Cindy’s message, although seemingly more inclusive, is super conservative and extreme. Her HoNoMo tour involves her going to college campuses across the States and preaching against sex before marriage. It’s sill the same message she was preaching two years ago – except this time the gays and lesbians are involved. Yay?
To our request for comment, Cindy said: “I love all people and all need Jesus. Gen Z is different.”
