Where to live: an essential guide to student housing in Sheffield
From someone who had a menty b when searching for a house
Looking for accommodation for the next academic year can be stressful, especially when trying to reach a decision on what area you want to live in.
Whether you’re deterred from Crookes due to its very (very) steep hills or wanting to live on the doorstep of your university, this guide explores student housing in Sheffield, from the perks to the potential drawbacks of each area.
Crookes
If your favourite memory from first year was the scenic (and slightly exhausting) walk to Endcliffe or Ranmoor, then Crookes and its many hills might just be the perfect place for you. But if that doesn’t sound like your idea of fun, don’t be too quick to write it off.
Crookes is home to a variety of local, independent gems, including Sorrel’s Cocoa Bakery and LISBOA – ideal for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Head further down the high street and you’ll find Bole Hill, one of Sheffield’s most beautiful spots. Here, you can share a cute picnic with friends and even catch a sunset in the summer.
Crookesmoor
Crookesmoor is the ultimate student hotspot for University of Sheffield students, especially if you love a good pub crawl. Perfectly placed between Crookes and the City Centre, it’s got easy access to all the key student areas. It’s also just a short walk from Goodwin Sports Centre, making that trip to the gym feel a little less like a chore.
Plus, Crookes Valley Park is right on your doorstep which can be a great place to relax with friends especially during the summer, complete with an open lake for the perfect view.

That said, it’s worth keeping in mind that break-ins can be a problem in this area, so make sure you do your research.
City Centre
If the idea of waking up around ten minutes before your lectures start is something you have dreamt of, the city centre is an ideal spot for some. With both transport and the university so close, you will no longer have an excuse to miss your 9ams.
What’s even more special about this location is that West Street is practically on your doorstep, making nights out much better with a cheeky Aslans (or Pasams) just down the road from you.
Moreover, if you’re someone who prefers to make the most of the daytime, the city centre has plenty to offer. From browsing the many stalls at the Moor Market to exploring the nearby Cambridge Street Collective food hall, there’s something for everyone in this area of Sheffield.
Ecclesall and Broomhall
The Ecclesall and Broomhall areas in Sheffield have plenty to keep you busy close to home. With easy access to Ecclesall Road, lined with charity shops, cafés, and food chains, there’s always something to do when you’re not at university. Nearby, Sharrow Vale and Endcliffe Park offer even more to explore. Sharrow Vale occasionally hosts local markets full of unique stalls, and the park is just a short walk away when you need some fresh air.
And if you’re already reminiscing about your silly fresher days (or mourning them a few years on), you’ll be pleased to know that student favourite the Francis Newton is close by, along with the beautiful Botanical Gardens – perfect for a midweek life contemplation session.
Broomhill
The Broomhill area is one that is very familiar to those of us who spent first year in Endcliffe or Ranmoor. On Fulwood Road, just a short walk away, there is a selection of stores nearby, including a Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons, and a local greengrocer making weekly food shops effortless. #
On top of this, there is a lot to do in such a small, local area. You can visit a variety of pubs (like the Fox and Duck and Nottingham House), go to the brand new Broomhill Climbing Works, and even explore the local record store, Record Collector.
Additionally, this area is located at the bottom of Crookes, and near to Broomhall and Ecclesall, making it a perfect student location.
