People spot hidden detail in The Ed Gein Story linking it to another huge Netflix show

It’s a big crossover

Netflix might’ve just pulled off one of the most surprising crossovers in true crime TV. The final episode of Monster: The Ed Gein Story, part of Netflix’s Monster anthology, dropped on the 3rd October, and it hides a clever surprise. This hidden twist doesn’t just end the chilling story of the infamous Wisconsin killer. It also connects the show to Mindhunter, one of Netflix’s most beloved (and sadly unfinished) true crime series.

In the final scenes, Monster introduces its version of serial killer Ted Bundy (played by John T. O’Brien) and brings in two real-life FBI agents, John Douglas and Robert Ressler (played by Sean Carrigan and Caleb Ruminer). These agents were the criminal profilers who inspired Mindhunter. During their hunt for Bundy, they come across another murderer, Jerry Brudos, portrayed by Happy Anderson, the same actor who played him in Mindhunter.

If you missed Mindhunter when it first came out, it follows the creation of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit in the late 1970s. The show stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, and became a hit for its eerie realism. Despite having a huge fanbase, Netflix put the series on hold indefinitely, and director David Fincher confirmed in 2023 that it was officially over — or so we thought.

Showrunner Ian Brennan told Netflix’s Tudum that the crossover was completely intentional. He said the team wanted to highlight the shared tone between Monster, Silence of the Lambs, and Mindhunter.

“We wanted to underline the last thing tonally that through Silence of the Lambs, he really influenced Mindhunter as well,” he said.

“That would be a fun way to put a cap on it, to use this other filmic vocabulary and then talk about the ways that he was part of those early days of FBI profiling.”

By bringing back familiar characters and connecting the two stories, Netflix seems to be teasing something bigger. This crossover is enough to reignite hope that Mindhunter might not be gone for good.
