Bristol Uni students received 47 per cent more noise complaints than UWE, data reveals
2,451 noise complaints were made to Bristol Uni over five years
Going to uni is a lot of partying, fire alarms and general chaos. And it seems that Bristol students aren’t the only ones who are causing carnage at uni.
A study by MattressNextDay found thousands of noise complaints were made to the University of Bristol between 2020 and 2025.
Bristol received the seventh most noise complaints, after Warwick, Southampton Solent University, Kent, Surrey, Edinburgh and Oxford Brookes.
A total of 2,451 noise complaints were made to the University of Bristol between the five years, with 375 leading to student disciplinary action
However, it seems that UoB takes the crown over noise complaints, and is also a lot more likely to be punished for them. How is UWE getting away with this?
University of Bristol received 47 per cent more complaints than University of West England
Over a five year period, 2020-2025, UoB students gained 2,451 noise complaints, 47 per cent more than UWE. 375 complaints resulted in student disciplinary action. In percentage terms, only 15.30 per cent of complaints had the consequence of a punishment.
Whereas, UWE students received 1,664 noise complaints over the same period, and only 149 had further disciplinary measures. A significantly lower, 8.95 per cent, resulted in punishment.

So, are there too many noisy students?
Bristol was the seventh most complained about student body in the country, according to the data by MattressNextDay.
The huge boom in university numbers over the last two decades has led to a debate about whether there are too many students in this city. A common complaint from residents is about the vast number of student accommodation towers in the city and nationwide during a housing crisis.
Who knows whether we will top the noisy charts this year, or, ironically, maybe, do so much better and come last. Although we should aim to be quieter, you can never dull Bristol down.
