Here’s all the liquids over 100ml Edinburgh students are bound to be packing this summer
Good news, ‘travel size’ vodka now means 2L
After decades of sobbing over tiny toothpaste tubes and shampoo bottles so small they make you question your life choices, some airport security has finally decided to chill. You can now take liquids over 100ml in your carry on. That’s right, the white flag has been waved.
The war on moisturiser? Officially over. And students? We think they’re going to making very bold use of their newfound freedom.
1. A whole bottle of vodka (because duty free is a scam)
“Why pay airport prices when I can bring my own?” Famous last words before being detained at border control for trying to smuggle in Smirnoff like it’s stolen diamond.
This decision will then be defended to the death and probably posted on a private story with the caption “free my boy.”
2. Homemade cocktails in mason jars
You can take the student out of the flat party, but you can’t take the flat party out of the student.
Some are bringing their own mixology kits on the plane now, mason jars and all. It’s not just a drink, it’s a lifestyle.
Bonus points for adding a reusable straw and a handpicked playlist for the plane journey.
3. Full size shampoo (and lots of it)
There’s something deeply healing about packing your actual shampoo instead of playing chemist with three mini plastic bottles and a dream.
Students are now confidently packing litre-sized haircare like they’re going on a world tour, because good hair days don’t stop at border control.
4. Their full skincare routine (all 13 steps of it)

Gone are the days of picking just one serum and praying for the best. Now it’s toner, moisturiser, spf, and something French they don’t even know how to pronounce but “it’s for hydration or something.” Their face will be thriving while their bank account withers.
5. Protein powder and pre-workout, because balance
Whether they’re abroad for study, adventure, or both, some students are still trying to hit their gym goals.
Because nothing screams “gap semester in Milan” like lugging around a three kilo tub of vanilla whey you’ll definitely never open.
It’ll sit in the Airbnb kitchen next to the unopened quinoa and your good intentions.
6. Their emotional support water bottle (probably filled with iced coffee)
Technically contains a liquid. Realistically, a personality trait. A pre-flight slurp of an iced latte is the modern travel talisman and now it can come right through security like royalty. Also doubles as a makeshift weapon if someone tries to talk to you before your pre-flight pint.
7. An entire carton of oat milk
One thing you’re willing to risk is being stranded without an oat milk serving barista within five minutes of you at all times (an Edinburgh luxury).
So now there’s a full size Oatly in their backpack like a dairy-free emotional support brick. Will it burst mid-flight? Maybe. Will they still bring it next time? Without a doubt.
8. Perfume the size of a fire extinguisher
For years, students have been delicately misting themselves with tragic 5ml testers. Now? They are spraying full size bottles like they’re fogging for mosquitoes. One squirt and five rows of the airport queue smell like a Sephora exploded. No one can be mad.
9. An entire bottle of Micellar Water even though they still use face wipes
They say they’re entering their skincare era. They post that they’re entering their skincare era. But deep down, we all know they’ll panic-remove their makeup with a tissue and prayer after night one. The micellar water is there for emotional support and a last resort.
10. Tanning drops that will absolutely leak all over their laptop
They haven’t opened it since last summer but it might come in handy.
For what? Who knows. But now their passport smells like fake coconut and their MacBook has a light golden undertone.
The skies are open. The rules are relaxed. And students are thriving in the most unhinged, brilliant, over packed way possible. TSA might be confused. Fellow passengers might be concerned. But one thing is for sure, everyone is moisturised, mildly caffeinated and just a little chaotic.
And frankly? We wouldn’t want it any other way.
