Swansea is ranked the safest city to study in Wales but university students aren’t convinced
‘I saw someone get mugged outside of my house, and even my own car was stolen’
Swansea has been rated as the safest city for students in Wales, but many people aren’t convinced by the data.
According to a study in 2024 by CUG (The Complete University Guide) 20.1 people per 1,000 experienced crime in Swansea’s student area, with violent or sexual crime at 17.2.
In comparison, Cardiff Metropolitan University’s student area equated to 13.7 and Cardiff University’s totalled of 15.4 percent.
So can Swansea still be labelled the safest?
In a statement released by Swansea University, a spokesperson commented: “Alongside being the safest city for students in Wales, Swansea also ranks seventh overall across the UK, placing it among the top 10 safest university locations in England and Wales.”
However, it appears not all students agree with this ranking.
Kali Iglesias told The Cardiff Tab: “There definitely should be further measures put in place.
“The walk-through campus feels unsafe, especially in the wintertime when it gets dark at 4pm and you have to walk home by yourself.”
Another Swansea student, Katie Davies, had similar feelings to Kali. She said there had been a few break ins on her street and explained that she thinks student homes are targeted.
“Students are especially a target due to the student-letting signs and advertisements assigned to our houses. That definitely is an attraction for crime,” she explained.
Adding: “People seeking to commit crimes can track when we go home for holiday periods, and that puts our belongings at risk.”
However, Dionne Richards said that whilst she feels safe in Swansea,”it’s essential to stay vigilant especially in a city, as there will always be people with bad intentions”. She also explained that she believes more police should patrol the area, especially in the evening.
