Miley Cyrus has an uncanny August 25 connection as godmother Dolly Parton dies on the same day

Miley Cyrus has always had a pretty remarkable connection to August 25, and now her beloved godmother, Dolly Parton, has died on the same date.

In fact, Miley once explained that she deliberately chose the date to release one of her most personal songs because it had already been important throughout her life and career.

Now, it has a completely different meaning for her. Dolly died aged 80 following a brief battle with cancer. Her representatives confirmed that she died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Centre in Nashville, surrounded by loved ones.

Miley and Dolly had a very close relationship. Dolly was not only her godmother, but also became part of Miley’s childhood and career, appearing as Aunt Dolly on Hannah Montana and working with her musically over the years.

Back in 2023, Miley released her reflective single Used to Be Young on August 25. When announcing the release, she explained, “I decided to release ‘Used To Be Young’ on August 25 because this particular date, historically, has been important to me personally and in my career.”

In 2013, Miley released Wrecking Ball, which went on to become her first US Billboard Hot 100 number one. It was also the day of her much-discussed MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke.

That performance became one of the biggest moments in Miley’s transition from her Hannah Montana days into a very different phase of her career.

In 2010, news broke that Miley and Liam Hemsworth had split after dating for around a year. Their relationship went through several more chapters after that, including getting back together, getting engaged and eventually marrying in 2018, before they split for good the following year.

So, by the time Miley chose the date for Used to Be Young, it was already tied to some pretty major changes in her life.

The song itself was about looking back at that period. Miley described it as a song about “honouring who we’ve been, loving who we are & celebrating who we will become.”

There is another reason it has always been significant to Miley. 25 August is her father Billy Ray Cyrus’ birthday. And Billy Ray is actually how Dolly became part of Miley’s life.

Billy Ray and Dolly had been friends for years, and after Miley was born in 1992, he asked Dolly to be her godmother. Dolly later recalled the moment, saying, “You just have to be her godmother,” before adding, “I accept.”

She went on to describe herself as Miley’s honorary godmother and said she had known her since she was a baby.

Dolly also once said of Miley, “I’m so proud of her, love her and she’s just like one of my own.”

Dolly played Aunt Dolly on Hannah Montana, performed Jolene with Miley and appeared on her song Rainbowland. They later worked together again on a new version of Wrecking Ball for Dolly’s 2023 album Rockstar.

And now, that same date is when Miley lost her godmother.
