University of Nottingham to hold a two minute silence for students killed in 2023 attacks

The university wants students to mark the day ‘in a way that feels right’

On Friday 13th June, the University of Nottingham will be holding a two minute silence at 10am in honour of the students who were killed by Valdo Calocane.

Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar were both students when they were fatally stabbed by Calocane on the 13th June 2023.

Calocane is currently on an indefinite hospital order following the killings of the two students and caretaker Ian Coates.

Two years on, the university is encouraging students to mark the day in a way that “feels right”, and said: “The moment will be one of reflection, remembrance, comfort and support for the university community.”

The two minute silence will be led by the university chaplain, Grant Walton, and there will be a gathering at the memorial walk.

Alternatively both victims have had foundations created in their names – the Grace O’Malley-Kumar Foundation and the Barnaby Webber Foundation, who are holding events to remember them.

The next event is the Grace O’Malley-Kumar Cup on 19th July at Beeston Hockey Club.

If you are struggling on this day, the university encourages people to contact its student wellbeing page.
