Birmingham students call out Circo after thinking they’d be ‘crushed’ in Friday’s queue
‘Everyone was bunched up into one place rather than an orderly queue. It was absolute carnage’
University of Birmingham students have called out Circo after thinking they’d be “crushed” in Friday’s queue.
Last week, the club faced significant shoving in the “mismanaged” queue with piles of students seeking to enjoy their night, starting from 7pm.
First year student Ben* told The Birmingham Tab: “Everyone was bunched up into one place rather than an orderly queue. It was absolute carnage.”
In agreement, another first year student who wished to stay anonymous added: “It was just completely mismanaged and there was no organisation whatsoever. They didn’t have barriers up properly so it was just like big groups of people instead of a small queue.”
Mary* also claimed: “People couldn’t move anywhere and they were just getting pushed around, they weren’t letting people in even though they had space to let them inside.”

When asked if she felt unsafe, first year student Alice* commented: “Oh yeah definitely, like loads of people did, and I got lucky as I got let in quite early so I knew it wasn’t gonna be very long, but some girls were coming out of the queue crying because they felt they were gonna get crushed.”
Another student, Gemma*, added: “I know a lot of people left and didn’t wanna be there and a lot of people got quite annoyed by it, and I didn’t end up staying very long and neither did my friends.”

The club’s recent effort to stabilise the queue was also criticised by students, with Joely* explaining: “The queue is always bad but it was more about the fact it wasn’t organised. Like normally it isn’t that bad when they have bouncers around the corner, but the queue was so long so early, it just turned 8pm.”
Mary agreed adding: “No one really wants to queue for a club for two hours and no one wants to show up to a club at 8pm and there are definitely things that could be done to improve the situation.”
Circo is a popular student club located in the heart of student life at Birmingham, Selly Oak. Friday and Monday are peak popularity days for the venue, with students queuing on Friday even as early as 7pm.
Talking about possible solutions for the queue, Joely explained: “I know some of my friends were saying they might introduce a ticket only system, which would probably be worse for them because they wouldn’t have as much money from people, but it would probably make it safer and people wouldn’t have to get there so early in an unsafe environment.”
Joely also suggested, however: “Perhaps introducing another club in Selly may narrow down the queue.”
Alice further commented: “I mean I think they should look into more security, but I don’t know if this will help or hinder the issue. But I do think they need to sort out a system in place where you book a ticket to get in or something.”
On the contrary, Ben claimed: “Well I think they do a pretty good job with the barrier up but I think it was just so early that they hadn’t really organised it yet, that’s probably why.”
