People are defending Chappell Roan after cruel post criticising her Drag Race look goes viral
An account on Instagram referred to Chappell as ‘supposedly’ lesbian
Chappell Roan made her long awaited debut as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race in the latest All Stars 10 episode, and it was glorious as you might expect. Chappell Roan is one of drag’s loudest champions and most well read fans – and her love for the art of drag goes so much deeper than what you’d expect from any bog standard Drag Race celebrity fan. For god’s sake, she literally considers herself to be a drag queen and Sasha Colby is her drag mother. She knows this art form like the back of her hand Chappell Roan was a great guest judge on Drag Race, but one post has gone extremely viral regarding what Roan decided to wear for her appearance on the show. Chappell Roan was in full drag, and her look emulated a sex doll – but not everyone understood the subtext and social critique of her wearing it and one particularly spiteful post has gone viral and has resulted in Chappell getting some well deserved defence online.
Here’s what’s gone down on Twitter regarding the look.

In a tweet that’s now been viewed close to 10 million times, an account on Instagram named @lesbianrepresentation shared Chappell’s Drag Race look to its story and said “a supposedly lesbian… woman dressing herself up as a man’s masturbation tool. A literal dehumanised sex object. Girl bye.”

When someone shared it on Twitter saying how much the post “pissed them off” – particularly the “supposedly lesbian” part of it, Chappell received a lot of support. It’s completely not okay to invalidate someone’s sexual orientation based on an opinion on their clothing or on the art of drag. Obviously, Chappell’s look is provocative – but the point was clearly missed.
One reply supported Chappell by saying “I don’t get how anyone watched this and didn’t see it as commentary. Isn’t that what drag is all about? It’s more than just dressing up—it’s a form of performance art.” Another said “They don’t understand camp” and another opined “Lesbians don’t owe you homosexuality.”

One quote shared when quoting the viral tweet shared a quote from Andrea Dworkin which reads “sexual freedom is when women do the things men think are sexy; the more women do these things, the more sexually free they are.”
Women can’t do satire. Women can’t make jokes. Women can’t do absurdist performance. What a world we live in, the people who try to tell us that not liking Twilight is misogynistic are grasping their pearls over a Drag Queen being provocative. https://t.co/9CZPfCSY04

Another quote that’s gone viral itself says “Women can’t do satire. Women can’t make jokes. Women can’t do absurdist performance. What a world we live in, the people who try to tell us that not liking Twilight is misogynistic are grasping their pearls over a drag queen being provocative.”
Chappell is yet to respond to the post. And nor should she, mind you. She did write in a post about her Drag Race appearance that she was so proud of the look and described it as “one of my fave looks we’ve ever done – the outfit inflated just like the real thing.”
