The police, ambulance and fire services have all spoken out
Liverpool authorities have released statements after a car plowed into football fans who celebrated the club’s win of the Premier League title. A man has been arrested after a car ran through pedestrians along the victory parade, and 47 have been confirmed as injured.
Merseyside Police confirmed the incident, which happened on Water Street yesterday. At time of publication, it’s been confirmed 20 people were treated at the scene, and a further 27 were taken to hospital. Among those injured are four children.
Authorities were alerted to the incident at 6.07pm on Monday. A 53-year-old white British man remains in custody. Police have said it is not being treated as a terror attack. A car was seen driving at speed through the crowds, of which it’s been estimated around a million people may have been attending. Police are reported to still be investigating how a car was able to gain access to the road – it had been pedestrianised for the parade.
A spokesperson for the North West Ambulance Service said on Monday (May 26): “NWAS is supporting an incident in Liverpool city center, following reports of a road traffic collision. We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
In a further update, David Kitchin of NWAS said: “We can confirm that our teams treated 20 patients at the scene for minor injuries, and these did not need hospital treatment. Twenty-seven patients in total were taken to hospital by ambulance, and we believe two of those, including one of the children, have sustained serious injuries.”

Assistant chief constable Jenny Sims also spoke out about the incident. She called it “horrific” and confirmed it had been declared a major incident.
“I want to thank all of the emergency services, partner agencies and members of the public who came to the assistance of the injured following this evening’s shocking incident, which we declared a major incident,” she said at a press conference.
“This had been a joyous day in Liverpool with hundreds of thousands of people lining the streets to celebrate Liverpool Football Club’s victory parade. A number of people have been injured and were taken to hospital. In addition, a large number of people of all ages were treated at the scene, but did not require hospital treatment.”
Firefighters were also on the scene to help those who were there. One child was trapped under the car that ran into pedestrians.
“On arrival, the crews were met with numerous injured… and four persons trapped under a vehicle,” Nick Searle, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer said.
“Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle, removed three adults and one child from beneath and passed them to our ambulance service colleagues. We then worked with emergency service partners to ensure casualties received medical treatment and transport to hospital as quickly as possible.”
He added: “My fire crews will maintain a visible and reassuring presence in the coming days and weeks.”
Authorities have also urged people not to share footage of what happened online, as images and videos of the event have already become widespread. “Any information that you do have, don’t share it on social media, share it directly with Merseyside Police,” leader of Liverpool City Council, Liam Robinson told BBC Breakfast.
Water Street remains closed this morning, as investigations continue.
