Body recovered from Thames confirmed to be that of 20-year-old Nepalese student

‘His parents are heartbroken. Sushan was their not just their child and their biggest hope. Now they are left with pain, sadness, and no clear answers about what happened’

A body recovered from the Thames has been confirmed to be that of a 20-year-old Nepalese student.

The deceased, identified as Sushan Oli, was a second year undergraduate student studying business management and leadership at Coventry University. His body was discovered on the banks of the River Thames in Waterloo on 29th April.

Originally from Mukisot, Western Rukum in Nepal, Sushan resided in London’s Dagenham Heathway during breaks from his studies at Coventry University.

Following the recovery of his body, the Metropolitan Police has conducted inquiries with his neighbours and Nepali friends at the university.

Biplav Khaadka, the UK Nepali Independent Student Society president and fellow Coventry University student, confirmed the news. He also confirmed how the body was identified, which was done by fingerprint analysis sent from Sushan’s home in Nepal.

In a tribute, Sushan’s aunt said: “His parents are heartbroken. Sushan was their not just their child and their biggest hope. Now they are left with pain, sadness, and no clear answers about what happened. What makes it even harder is that they do not have the money to bring their son’s body back home to Nepal for one last goodbye.

“They had already taken a big loan to send him to the UK for a better future. Now they are in deep sorrow and also struggling with money.”

According to Bipin Duwadi, spokesperson and deputy head of mission at the Nepalese Embassy in London, the Nepalese Embassy has been providing regular updates to Sushan’s grieving family.

The embassy itself was notified of Sushan’s disappearance on 23rd April. The cause of death remains unknown.

At the scene, Sushan’s belongings, such as his wallet, documents, room key, passport and mobile phone, were recovered to aid identification further.

A review of CCTV footage and call logs found no suspicious circumstances during the preliminary investigation. The 20-year-old’s body is currently in a morgue, awaiting a post-mortem examination. His family will decide whether to repatriate him to Nepal or hold final rites in the UK.

His family has since created a GoFundMe page to raise money so Sushan can be repatriated.
