Cardiff Uni strikes cancelled as union promises no industrial action this year.

It was announced earlier this week that Cardiff Uni would hold a meeting with representatives of the Cardiff UCU to discuss their cuts proposals on April 30th. As a result, the UCU has stated that all scheduled strikes have been cancelled.

This includes the industrial action set to start today, May 1st, as well as other planned dates such as June 9th and June 23rd to 27th, along with the marking boycott that was supposed to begin on May 6th.

At the “packed Members’ Meeting,” the UCU held two votes, which were both “overwhelmingly” passed.

The first vote was in favour of accepting the University management’s offer of no compulsory redundancies in 2025 in return for calling off the planned strikes and the marking and assessment boycott. This also included agreeing not to instigate any further industrial action under the current mandate.

For the second vote, members voted to renew their current industrial action mandate, which is set to  expire in September 2025.

In a statement released by the Cardiff UCU, a spokesperson said: “We truly welcome the new partnership-led approach the University has committed to, and we look forward to working much more closely together than we’ve been able to so far. We will be releasing a joint statement regarding the agreement in due course.”
