Netflix has launched a brand new subtitle option for YOU, and it’s a game-changer
Finally!
Netflix has just announced they’ve introduced a brand new subtitle option for season five of YOU, and it’s going to change your life.
The brand new feature means the subtitles will only show spoken dialogue, not all the sound effects. So, you’ll see a transcription of the conversations, but it won’t show things like “[door slams]” or “[phone buzzing]”.
“Just in time for all the twists, inner monologues, and intense eye contact in the final season of YOU — we’re introducing a new option: original language subtitles that show only the spoken dialogue,” the streaming service said.
Until now, if you wanted subtitles in the show’s original language, you had to turn on the Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH/CC) option, which includes dialogue, audio cues and also the speaker’s name.
Now, there are two different options under the Subtitles heading, “English” and “English (CC).” The first will give you dialogue subtitles only, while the second includes both dialogue and audio cues like [dramatic music swells].”

Over 50% of Americans say they watch TV with subtitles the majority of the time, so the changes are designed to cater to people who enjoy using captions, but aren’t hard of hearing. So, they don’t need the audio cues.
The new options will be available with all new Netflix Originals that arrive on the subscription service, starting with YOU season five. So, that’s things like Ginny & Georgia and Squid Game, which are both coming in the next few months.
Plus, the two new caption options will be available in every language they offer.

“So whether you’re watching in a noisy room, sneaking in an episode while someone’s sleeping, or just trying to keep up with Joe’s internal spiral, you’ve now got more subtitle options to choose from,” Netflix added.
You can also change the font, size, shadow, and background color of subtitles on Netflix in the settings.
