All the huge Black Mirror season seven plot holes, that are stopping me from sleeping at night

No, I’m not being dramatic

Ever since Black Mirror season seven dropped, people have been pointing out plot holes all over the place. Look, when Charlie Brooker created a show where everything was done for a reason, he should expect the episodes to be brutally picked apart.

People have spotted plot holes across three of the season seven Black Mirror episodes. Once you spot them, despite how minor you might think they are, they’re really, *really* annoying.

Here is a complete rundown of the biggest plot holes that have been spotted in Black Mirror season seven.

In Common People, Amanda didn’t even need to die

In Common People, Amanda was stuck in the health plan set up by Rivermind, to keep her alive. The subscription kept upping and upping its prices, and the couple had to fork out more to save Amanda. In the end, they couldn’t live anymore. Mike killed his own wife, in a heartbreaking end.

But what makes this even more sad was that there was a simple way Mike didn’t have to do this. And the fact neither he or Amanda worked this out, is one of the biggest Black Mirror season seven plot holes. When introduced to Rivermind LUX, the couple were told Amanda could download an infinite number of skills, all for the money she paid.

So, why the hell weren’t Amanda and Mike using it to their advantage? Struggling with money? Not anymore, because you just downloaded the financial skills of a hedge fund manager. The possibilities were literally endless. Amanda could have downloaded hacking skills to change Rivermind to suit her needs, or download the skills of a surgeon and got a huge new job. WHY DID SHE DIE?!

Plus, it seems silly Mike and Amanda couldn’t pay for Rivermind

That wasn’t the only Common People plot hole. It seemed a little ridiculous that Mike and Amanda couldn’t pay for Rivermind in the first place, and people have called it out. Along the way of trying to pay for the healthcare, Mike took drastic measures. He signed up to websites where he’d ridicule himself online for cash, but also took every overtime opportunity he could have at work.

People on Reddit have noted that in his role of work, Mike could have “easily” made up the $300 a month he needed for Amanda’s healthcare. The episode showed us a calendar, and Mike was doing overtime every single day of the week. According to Reddit, even on minimum wage, that alone – without the embarrassing online videos – could have made the money he needed.

One person said: “My biggest issue was that he was working so much overtime and somehow it didn’t add up to $300 a month. Even if he was making $10/hr, that would have added up to 15 days of working two hours extra. There were many months that he worked more than that.”

Another said: “Yes! This drove me nuts. It’s $300 a month. He’s a welder. Like why tf is he working overtime every week constantly. Made zero sense.”

The technology in Hotel Reverie made no sense

via Netflix

People have said the tech used in Hotel Reverie just doesn’t make sense. The episode followed Brandy Friday, an actor hired to step back into an old black and white film and recreate it. It used a high tech system to place her back into the film’s pocket dimension, with AI recreations of all the original actors.

But, there was a big issue. Throughout the episode we were reminded the “show must go on” in sorts, and no matter what happened, Brandy must continue with the script – or it risked her life, and them not being able to pull her back out of the simulation, to her real body.

So, you’re telling me we’ve reached the level of tech advancement that means we can pop a real person into what is essentially a live-streamed movie, with AI people who know the story…but there’s no pause button? Every problem Brandy faced could have been prevented if the team making the film simply pressed pause, or rewound the take.

There was a huge USS Callister error

Finally, there was also a continuity issue with USS Callister: Into Infinity, with how the episode linked back to the original. In the new episode, we see the feral Walton clone has made a crude sex toy out of a rock with a face on it and a hole in the back.

But, in the original USS Callister, Robert Daly had removed all genitals from the clones of his real world staff. The Walton clone in the original explained: “We’ve tried grinding our mounds together out of sheer boredom. No sensation at all.” An oversight?
