There’s *another* plot hole in Black Mirror’s Common People, and it’s the most annoying yet

‘This drove me nuts’

People have spotted yet another plot hole in Black Mirror season seven episode, Common People. Earlier this week one was spotted that could have altered the show’s ending, but now one has been found that seemingly blows the whole episode out the water.

Common People follows the story of married couple, Amanda and Mike. Amanda was left fighting for her life after a medical emergency. Her desperate husband Mike then signed her up for Rivermind, a high-tech system to keep her alive. But, at what cost? Tied to a subscription model controlled by Rivermind, Amanda’s new lease on life was a financial trap.

Along the way of trying to pay for the healthcare, Mike took drastic measures. He signed up to websites where he’d ridicule himself online for cash, but also took every overtime opportunity he could have at work. Now, this is where the plot hole comes into play.

People on Reddit have noted that in his role of work, Mike could have “easily” made up the $300 a month he needed for Amanda’s healthcare. The episode showed us a calendar, and Mike was doing overtime every single day of the week. According to Reddit, even on minimum wage, that alone – without the embarrassing online videos – could have made the money he needed.

“Addressing a common problem people have with season seven, episode one,” one person began. “A common complaint people seem to have is how a couple with a welding job and a teacher job is not able to afford $300 a month. I think it is not about the figure of $300 but just an interpretation of where the society is headed.

“It’s basically telling you that in this modern dystopian world where we are headed as a society, occupation like teaching and blue collared work won’t be enough to sustain yourself. It will just be all about gadgets, tech, and tech lords who will be running the show.”

One comment below added: “My biggest issue was that he was working so much overtime and somehow it didn’t add up to $300 a month. Even if he was making $10/hr, that would have added up to 15 days of working two hours extra. There were many months that he worked more than that.”

Another said: “Yes! This drove me nuts. It’s $300 a month. He’s a welder. Like why tf is he working overtime every week constantly. Made zero sense.” Someone else said: “Yeah, she could pay for the $300 and even the Plus package and still make some extra money for herself. It would have been more realistic if the price was way higher, which would also be accurate for a life-saving product.”

The divide really got people talking. One person on Reddit argued: “Is everyone a millionaire on this sub? You’ve never been in a position where you couldn’t spare $300 for that month?” But then others clapped back that for life saving technology, it isn’t much money.

“You don’t have to be a millionaire to be able to afford an extra $3,600 a year to literally sustain a life,” one person argued.

It’s got everyone talking!
