
Uni of Liverpool named University of the Year at Educate North Awards
UoL scooped up the award thanks to its efforts in research, inclusion, and global reach
Everyone’s favourite red brick university has officially been given the prestigious University of the Year Award at the Educate North Awards this year.
The University of Liverpool was crowned with the top spot at the ceremony in Manchester on April 3rd.
A panel of judges at Educate North celebrated the university’s commitment to being a leader of international research, as well as the range of university partnerships UoL have offered for a number of years.
The ENAs were hosted by Good Morning Britain presenter Ranvir Singh, who bestowed the award to Lucy Everest, the University’s Chief Operating Officer, who accepted on behalf on the institution.
The judges applauded the University of Liverpool for being “one of the great beacons of knowledge, learning and enablement in the North and a global leader of international research and people development”.
The award was handed to the university for standing as “a world leader in health sciences and a range of subjects, stretching from the Arts through to Zoology”.
Judges also said: “The university is in the top three leading research universities in the UK for recruiting students from state schools and areas where participation in higher education is low and has an extensive international presence with a range of university partnerships in Europe, China, India, Canada and North America.”
“It has a long history of being inclusive, innovative and caring for all and is one of the few leading research universities to hold the Gold Standard in Teaching Award.”
The University of the Year award also emphasised UoL’s increase in student participation.
The 2024/25 academic year saw the University of Liverpool’s largest ever intake of students from the most socio-economically disadvantaged areas.
The institution’s sector-leading work supporting care experienced students has also seen this cohort double over the last four years.

In a statement shared online, the University of Liverpool’s vice-chancellor, Professor Tim Jones, praised the teams involved in strengthening the university’s innovation and research schemes.
He said: “This is a huge honour for the University, and I’m delighted with this fantastic win”.
“We are proud to have made important progress in all major international and domestic league tables over the last year and, indeed, we are the only Russell Group university to improve across all five.
“This, together with our strengths in education and experience, research and innovation, internationalisation, and economic impact really set us apart.
“Our success at these prestigious awards is testament to the incredible work by teams across the institution and I wish to extend a huge congratulations to them all”.
This achievement is just one of many, in an impressive year for Liverpool so far.
The red brick has already boasted improvements in five major international and domestic league tables.
Currently, the university is at its highest point in the three major domestic league tables since 2020, and was recently praised for progress made within its student apprenticeship scheme.
The Educate North Awards also saw success for Liverpool John Moores University, who claimed the top spot for Business School of the Year.
