Vaping to be allowed in King’s College London lectures to ‘improve concentration’

A leaked email says ‘vaping permits’ will soon be introduced for select students

Vaping will be allowed in King’s College London lectures to “improve concentration”.

The new rule will see students being able to apply for “vaping permits” as of April 13th.

Students with these permits will then be allowed to vape in lectures and seminars, in a move which is thought to combat “discomfort” and “anxiety”.

In a leaked email sent to staff, the university petitioned to introduce permits as a solution to the influx of students vaping within prohibited areas such as toilets, study pods and lecture halls. This was allegedly prompted by an uptick in fire alarms being triggered, particularly in the Maughan Library due to indoor vaping.

It detailed that while indoor vaping remains difficult to police, providing permits will allow the university to better “track and trace” where it happens. The email also stated that new air-con systems will be constructed to ensure proper ventilation and air quality.

This change will supposedly “improve in-person lecture attendance” and “prevent the disruption of lectures”  as students will be able to vape in previously prohibited areas.

The email also noted that “vape permits” will be provided via Student Records following a successful application.

It is not yet known what the application will entail.

The King’s Tab spoke to a few students and asked about their thoughts on this new policy. Cloudia, a third year physics student commented: “It’s ridiculous, why should I have to endure sitting in someone else’s blueberry cloud while I’m trying to get an education?

“It’s unfair that our tuition fees are going towards assisting other people’s addictions”.

Second year medicine students Misty, added: “The growing normalisation of vaping indoors is concerning, there is no consideration for staff and students who have lung issues that could be triggered by indoor smoking!”

However, other students who could potentially benefit from the introduction of indoor smoking believe that it may be key in helping students remain focused for longer periods of time.

Jules, a first year English student, told The King’s Tab: “Staying focused for a two hour lecture is already hard enough, but it’s even harder when all you can think about is a smoke break. People are already secretly vaping in lectures anyway, the new ventilation systems will benefit everyone!”

You should probably check the date, you April fools!
