Move over Valentine’s: How to best celebrate Galentine’s Day with your Liverpool friends
Watching Bridget Jones with some M&S tinnies is my idea of a very nice day out
Valentine’s Day is here – get those last minute gifts sorted if you haven’t already – and love is well and truly in the air. That love doesn’t have to be limited to romantic escapades though, or that strange singleton you went on a date with once.
Sometimes the best love you’ll ever find is the platonic kind. Whether they’re your girl or guy friends, everyone loves a wholesome activity nowadays, and anything gentle on that dying student loan of theirs is bound to be a hit. Your gals deserve to be celebrated 365 days of the year, but making up a cutesy itinerary for your girl group is a must this week.
So, get to celebrating the feminine friendships in your life by completing one (or all) of these 1o out of 10 Galentine’s Day recommendations.
Go for drinks
Let’s be honest with ourselves, most Galentine’s Day dates usually follow the path of drinking. Why stray from tradition? Most bars have Valentine’s Day deals and events on, and it’s an awful shame to leave all those to the romantically involved.
Places like Tonight Josephine are hosting a variety of Galentine’s Day events including their “sass-aoke” – basically karaoke but everyone sings – infinitely less embarrassing than regular karaoke. It would be rude not to get a few cocktails down you on the big day, even if it doesn’t end as wholesomely as you’d expect.
Try your hand at a cocktail-making class
Most Read
Keeping the romantic drinking theme going, there’s nothing more bougie than getting dressed up to go and drink cocktails, right? Well we bet you’ve never thought of making your own before. No, a vodka lemonade with a couple splashes of orange juice doesn’t count, unfortunately.
There’s plenty of chances in and around Liverpool to test your mixology skills out at a cocktail-making session. The Alchemist in town is offering a masterclass in cocktail making, and you get to have a go at making a drink from titseir Chemistry and Theatre menu.
Plus its offering cocktail oysters if you fancy trying those – sounds pretty romantic if you ask me. If you can’t warrant splashing the cash on a class, you could try making your own cocktails at home, using whatever you have leftover from last week’s pres.
Take a picnic down to Sefton Park
This one is a cute friend date and can be as simple or as extravagant as you want it to be. It might be a bit limited by the classic Liverpool weather, but perfect for an afternoon of wholesome girly chats and most likely, some M&S tinnies. You might want to consider wrapping up warm and finding a picnic table or bringing a thick blanket, but you’re bound to have a good time sprawled out on the grass with some picky bits and a speaker. Just like the good old days.
Host a wholesome dinner date
Perhaps not the easiest option on actual Valentine’s Day, but let’s not forget Galentine’s Day is technically on the 15th of February! Still, if you’d rather find somewhere to go on the big night, then maybe try Lark Lane, for a wholesome and romantic meal with the girlies.
There’s something about a set menu and some fancy cocktails that just seems so upmarket, and so worth getting dressed up for. If you don’t like the sound of watching a million couples have Valentine’s Day dates around you all night though, you might be partial to chipping in for a home cooked meal – I’d nominate the best chef in your friend group to take this on though. It’s light on the pockets, very much BYOB and the perfect opportunity to get the girls together for a night of fun.
Have a go at paint and sip or pottery session
There are a few paint and sip and pottery places across Liverpool, including Picasso and Pinot and our beloved Frankie’s Paint-a-Pot in Smithdown. Here you are provided with your materials and inspiration, as well as booze if you’re up for it. Sounds ideal!
If you time it right, Frankie’s also offers clay workshops where you can craft and paint your piece over the course of two weeks. The next session doesn’t start in time for V-Day, but it could potentially be a great belated celebration if you can’t all get together for the big day.
If drinking is not for you, you can still attend or even host an event at your own home! There are plenty of places in town where you can pick up budget arts and crafts supplies to make your own DIY crafting session – your cupboards are bound to be full with decorated wine glasses and clay sculptures at the end of the month.
Buy your girls some flowers
Simple but effective – flowers on Valentine’s Day. Here the budget is really up to you as you can go big at an independent florist, or just nip into Tesco and grab a bunch.
If you’re feeling creative, you could host a bouquet arranging event, and combine supermarket flowers into one big, personalised bouquet!
Try out some arcade games
There’s nothing that screams Valentine’s Day in the 1990s more than taking your lovers down to an arcade. You can deepen your girl friendships by getting ridiculously competitive during Mario Kart, because nothing tests a bond more than thrashing someone at a video game. Just make sure to take your anger out on Dance Dance Revolution and not on your besties!
Have a romantic baking session
Bring your friends some treats made with love and a little help from Betty Crocker. As long as you don’t annoy your flatmates with the inevitable baking mess, this is a sure fire way of sweetening up the day. Or, if you don’t fancy having a go at baking brownies on your own, turn it into a cute Galentine’s Day girls night and watch a cheesy rom-com while you whisk up a storm in the kitchen. Sweet treats and a cosy night in sound like a win-win.
If nobody’s buying you flowers this Valentine’s Day, then don’t even worry about it – your girls have always got you x
