Here are eight spots in Liverpool that are perfect for a solo Valentine’s Day date
Celebrating anti-cuffing season is the way forward
Are you feeling extra single this Valentine’s Day? Did you recently leave a relationship and find yourself all alone, or you’re feeling sick of seeing couples on campus holding hands?
If the only thing warming your bed this year is the electric blanket your mum got you for Christmas, then it’s time to treat yourself to a solo date – you no longer have to be the single friend being plagued by photos of everyone’s dates in Petit Cafe.
From activities to scenic solo walks, we have scouted out the best places in Liverpool for you to chase away those February blues and avoid the Valentine’s Day FOMO.
Talk a walk through Sefton Park
Nothing says Valentine’s Day more than a walk in a park. That is why we chose the best that Liverpool has to offer: Sefton Park. Reconnect with nature, pack a picnic, maybe invite friends, play tennis, run, watch the ducks – there are so many things to do to get you over the slump of feeling single.
Don’t forget to visit the Palm House for some romantic hot chocolate and to look at all the lovely greenery. There’s definitely enough to do to take your mind off the fact that this is your third solo Valentine’s Day in a row.
It would be rude not to make the trip to Lark Lane while you’re down by Sefton Park. It is an entire street full of different kinds of restaurants, cafes, and quaint shops, each equipped with its own vibe.
Have some retail fun at Liverpool ONE
Most Read
What cures the Valentine’s Day FOMO the best? Retail therapy, obviously, and there’s no better place to go than Liverpool ONE, nestled right in the city centre. There’s something there for everyone, from high end fashion brands to building your own Lego figure.
Even if you don’t feel like buying anything, which we highly doubt, window shopping is the best alternative to get you away from window stalking couples from the comfort of your bedroom.
Visit a library or a bookstore
There’s something oddly romantic about solo book shopping to me. There are so many libraries and bookstores to choose from, from the Waterstones located in Liverpool ONE with its very own cafe, to the Reid of Liverpool – located in an old Georgian building at the top of Mount Pleasant.
You can sit and read (or at least pretend to) or people-watch as all the happy couples walk on by. Plus, you can get a new book to add to your pile of unread books that you said you would start going through at the start of the year. This definitely will take your mind off the lack of a Valentine this year.
Stop by the Royal Albert Dock
Next on the list is everyone’s favourite place, the Royal Albert Dock. There’s much to do on The Docks, like taking a walk on the pier, going on the big wheel, or visit the House of Spells, known for its Harry Potter merch. Pay a visit to the Maritime Museum where you can learn all about the history of The Docks – nothing says self-love more than taking yourself through the city’s history. Besides, The Docks are also known for having the best sunsets at the end of the day, so make sure not to miss that.
Drop in at a museum or a gallery
Liverpool has plenty to offer when it comes to history and culture. Pick your museum of choice, or three, and explore everything you need to know when it comes to the history of the city. We recommend the World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery, or visiting the pop-up Tate Liverpool, which always has cool, free exhibitions. Essentially, walk around and admire art. Sounds romantic to me.
Eat at a restaurant
Take yourself out for a meal. It’s self-care. Pick from one of Liverpool’s top-rated food spots that differ from cuisine, to culture, to ambience. Book a table or simply walk through Bold Street, and you are bound to find a restaurant that you will love. Maybe take the chance and try new foods on your solo adventure. Either way, consider how cool you’ll look sitting by yourself, in a ‘revolting against love’ type of way.
Go to a theatre or cinema
Liverpool is equally known for its theatre scene – there are currently so many plays and shows on, ranging from comedy to classic literature that you can easily go and see on a solo date. Drop in at the FACT cinema to watch the latest films that will earn you brownie points on Letterboxd. It’s also no secret that the brand new Bridget Jones movie came out on the 13th of February, and nothing screams solo Valentine’s Date more than giggling away to that in the cinema.
Head down to a Valentine’s Day themed event
Finally, the greatest thing about living in Liverpool is that there is always an event going on somewhere, and they advertise a lot. A quick Google or Instagram search will get you booked and busy on Valentine’s Day, and there truly is something for everyone in town. Look out for events from Girls on the Go, or similar pages, because they always have plenty planned. Make sure to have fun and meet new people, or show love to those already in your life.
If you’re also feeling a bit out there, make the most of the fact that Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday, and take it as your sign to go out clubbing. Buy a ticket, invite fellow singles out to any of the finest dancefloors and groove the night away.
Don’t let Valentine’s Day get you down, because the love that is in the air is just as much yours as it belongs to the couples cuddling on a bench in Sefton Park. Take our advice and get yourself out there, because there’s no love better than self-love.
