Here’s the ultimate Liverpool student’s guide to hosting Galentine’s Day on a budget

You don’t have to spend fortunes to have a good time

Don’t have a special someone in mind to celebrate Valentine’s Day with this year? Who cares!

With the big day right around the corner, there’s guaranteed to be some singletons in your friendship circle looking for some wholesome activities to celebrate all the best kinds of platonic relationships. You don’t want to leave them “singled” out, after all. Excuse the pun.

Hosting a girl’s night for Galentine’s Day is miles better than chasing up your Hinge situationship the night before, begging for them to book a romantic night away or a table at an expensive restaurant in town. We’ve all been short on cash at some point as students, and we know full well nobody has the big bucks to spare on a fancy dinner.

So why not do it on a budget?

We’ve created the perfect guide to hosting or celebrating a cute and demure night full of platonic love, girly gossiping and probably some cheap wine from Wag1Offy. That’s optional, but trust us – nobody’s got you like your girls got you.

Wine glass painting

Keeping on that theme of drinking away your single feelings, grab a group of girlies, run to Lidl for the cheapest bottles of wine you can possibly find, and get crafting while you’re at it. Picking up some paints and wine glasses on your next trip into town will make for a wholesome night in yapping away and celebrating your friendships by painting a trinket or two that you can keep forever.

Until you inevitably smash it at the next sports social pres you have, but that’s not the point. Throw the tunes on, get your comfy clothes on and and start painting ladies!

Host a rom-com movie night

Who doesn’t love a cringey early 2000s romance film? I know I do. Valentine’s Day is the ideal time to binge watch every Bridget Jones movie, and scroll through Netflix for as long as your heart desires, searching for the perfect cheesy flick to accompany some picky bits and a glass of wine.

This is another activity suited to a set of matching pyjamas and a sweet treat with the girls. Even light a few candles to make it romantic, just don’t tell your landlord.

Match in The Hatch

No one wants to be on their own on Valentine’s Night, and nothing says romance like meeting some random strangers in the same place you tactical chundered in last Wednesday. Why not give speed dating a try? Our beloved bar The Hatch are hosting a Match in The Hatch night on the 12th and 14th of February for any of the girlies looking for their perfect partner.

It’s the perfect evening out for a laugh and some cheap drinks -and you never know you, could meet the love of your life. What a story to tell the kids.

Have a go at the PowerPoint night trend

If you’re on the same side of TikTok as me, then you’ve definitely seen the trend of students hosting PowerPoint nights with their pals to showcase their weirdest fun facts and obsessions, or imagine a hilarious scenario involving their housemates. Why Get all the girls together this Galentine’s and see how unhinged your friend group can get!

Any time I’ve done this with my friends it’s gone one of three ways – shock, disappointment, or so many fits of laughter. You could dedicate a slide to each of your friends, designing them a fake Tinder profile, ranking their previous partners, or telling some ridiculous dating stories of your own. The opportunities are endless.

Have a wholesome baking afternoon

Instead of splashing your student loan on every single one of the bakery items in Lidl, have a go at making some of your own one afternoon. Scroll through TikTok or Pinterest until you find some recipes that take your fancy, gather the girls and have a wholesome few hours of baking as many sweet treats as you can manage before you start to fall out.

You could even find a Valentine’s Day themed baking kit to use. Stick some cheesy love songs on in the kitchen, take some candid photos and have a good time! No partner, no problem.

Hit the town, obviously

Sometimes you just have to stick to what you know. Grab your besties, host an extravagant pres with some homemade cocktails, nibbles and a bit of ABBA to get the night started, and head out to Concert Square for an all-girls night out. There’s nothing better than all of you being in the mood to go and have a boogie. The big day might be a Friday, but there’s nothing stopping you from celebrating on a budget with some student deals and cheap drinks.

You’ve got your classic spots across the city centre, but you could always branch out and head to somewhere new to celebrate your best of the best friendships. Try out Gloria’s if you’re up for a 70s disco themed night, or a fancy cocktail bar if you’re feeling dressy. There’s always the Black Cat on Smithdown Road if you don’t want to venture too far – if you’re planning on having a productive weekend minus the hangover, then that might tempt you.

The girls have got you if you’re feeling extra single this year x
