Here are five non-basic Valentine’s date idea for students in Birmingham

If you’re looking for a way to spice up your Valentine’s Day date and stay in budget, we’ve got you

It’s Valentine’s Day, and you might be getting ready to woo your valentine with an expensive dinner date. But with prices skyrocketing and student budgets staying woefully small, this can be both unaffordable and overdone.

So if you’re looking for a way to spice up your Valentine’s Day date and stay in budget, here are five fun and not-overdone date ideas.

Crazy golf

Crazy golf can be a fun and creative way to spend some quality time together on the day of love. With lots of surprises along the course, this could be a great way to enjoy some fun competition (and the odd water spray) together.

Also, with most bookings ranging from £15 to £25, it’s well within budget and can even be found in Birmingham’s Bull Ring.

So, whether you’re both trying something new, or you’re a pro flexing their skills, this could be a fun thing to try this Valentine’s Day.

A bookshop date

If you or your valentine are more into the bookish side of things, why not treat them to a bookshop date?

Birmingham boasts an amazing selection of second hand, independent and major bookshops so there really is something for everyone. For an even more personal touch, you could each pick a book that reminds you of each other, read it, annotate and swap. Little notes like “us” or “made me think of you” next to a romantic passage is the epitome of romance. And let’s be real, books aren’t that pricey, so it’s a win win! So, why not get to know Birmingham’s literary scene and make your valentine swoon at the same time?

Paint-balling

Ideal for anyone who’s favourite romcom is 10 Things I Hate About You.

There are a multitude of locations, sets and difficulties to suit all across the Midlands. Furthermore, with most places in Birmingham charging around £10 to £25 a head, this could be an easy way to unleash your playful side without upsetting your wallet. There are even glow in the dark options too!

So if you and your valentine are more sporty and would prefer an activity over the typical nice meal out, why not give paint-balling a go? You could even watch 10 Things I Hate About You after.

Games night

If you are more of the chill, staying in sort, then how about a games night. Whether this is a classic like Monopoly or a new card or board game, this can be a low maintenance, relaxed date night.

If you or your beau are into games like Cluedo, you could order a murder mystery pack off Amazon or pick up the new board game, Muddle, from Foyles.

If traditional board games aren’t really your thing puzzles and Lego can be a great way to spend time together and to create something by the end of the night. A thoughtful Lego bouquet is a romantic way to give a thoughtful and romantic gift that wont wilt and die after a few weeks. And when you can nab them in Aldi for £2.99 you can’t go wrong!

Also, for those athletic students out there, you can always whip out Wii Sport.

Winterbourne House and Gardens

If you and your valentine fancy a romantic walk around some glorious gardens and a historically restored early 20th century house then Winterbourne is the place for you.

With gorgeous sprawling gardens that hold so much history and personality, an enormous pond and mini waterfall, and the beautiful historical house, this would be a lovely way to spend the day with any history and outdoors lovers. Plus with a cafe, gift shop, second hand bookshop and plant shop all on site, there really is something for everyone at Winterbourne.

Add that to the fact that UoB students go free and can get money off for non-UoB guests and this is a great way to reconnect with local history and nature on a budget.

Don’t forget all of these ideas could easily be flipped and used for some Galentine’s fun! We hope that these ideas provide some inspiration to take a non-typical approach this Valentine’s Day and make it the most memorable yet!
