Bear Grylls chose to remain close friends with Russell Brand after sexual assault allegations

‘You can’t only stand beside people who have had perfect journey’

Celebrity Bear Hunt host Bear Grylls has revealed why he decided to remain close friends with Russell Brand following the sexual allegations against him.

The pair first became friends after filming together for Running Wild With Bear Grylls, which aired in August 2023 before the allegations surfaced.

During the show, Bear and Russell discussed religion together, with Russell admitting he’d drifted away from faith.

He said: “When you stop drinking and stop taking drugs, you’re confronted with the nature of the problem.

“I was a disconnected person, certainly from any sense of higher purpose or God.”

Soon after the allegations of sexual assault came out against Russell last year, he shared an Instagram photo of himself getting baptised in a river with Bear Grylls present next to him. He wrote in the caption: “Me, Bear Grylls, The River Thames and of course, The Holy Spirit.”

Now the Celebrity Bear Hunt star has shared the reason why he decided to remain friends with Russell Brand, with Bear Grylls saying he “never judges.”

He told the Evening Standard: “I try and live in a way that I never judge and I always try and love – and that principle doesn’t just apply to perfect people with perfect lives.

“He was a Running Wild guest; I’m friends with many of our Running Wild guests. And I always try to think of that phrase, ‘WWJD’ – what would Jesus do? That’s been a guiding principle for me.”

During press for Celebrity Bear Hunt, he continued in his odd justifications, claiming that seeing Russell get baptised showed Bear Grylls that Russell had gained “humility and repentance.”

He explained to The Telegraph: “You know what, whoever it is, you can’t only stand beside people who have had perfect journeys. It was for him a real moment of humility and repentance and genuine heart-felt finding of quite a faith in his life.

He added: “People say to me, ‘What about the victims?’ If they’re victims. And I go, ‘Of course, I stand beside everybody. We are called to love everybody and not to judge anyone.’”
