Trial date set for man accused of causing the death of a University of York professor

Professor Simon McQueen-Mason died following a fatal collision when cycling

A trial date has been set for a man faced with the charge of causing the death of a York professor by careless driving.

Timothy Cale collided with Simon McQueen-Mason whilst he was cycling on the road, on June 5th, 2022.

Cale appeared before a judge on Monday, January 13, where his case was adjourned for a trial at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on November 3rd, York Press reports.

Cale collided with cyclist Simon McQueen-Mason in a Land Rover Freelander whilst driving on Main Road in Shorwell, Isle of Wight.

Emergency services were called at approximately 10.15am, and teams answered a 999 call that stated a cyclist had collided with a vehicle, however Simon was pronounced dead shortly after.

Simon McQueen-Mason was a university professor and former chair of materials biology at the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products at the University of York.

In the December hearing, Mr Cale had denied causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

The January hearing saw the case adjourned once again for a trial at the same venue on November 3rd 2025. Mr Cale was granted unconditional bail until that date.

The upcoming trial is estimated to last four to five days.
