‘Heartbroken’ family pay tribute to York student after his body is recovered from Foss River

‘Taymoor will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we share’


The family of a York student whose body was found in a river in York have paid tribute to him.

Taymoor Hassan, a York St John student, went missing on December 4th and his body was recovered from the river the next day.

His brother, Tayyab Shahzada, shared a heartfelt tribute following the news, where he described Taymoor’s death as having left “a void in the hearts of those who loved him”.

Taymoor’s friends raised concerns of his whereabouts after he was last seen at 2am on Wednesday December 4th whilst walking home.

They said that Taymoor’s last location was pinged on the riverside, and his friends were worried as he was visually impaired.

His body was pulled from Foss River the next day, Thursday 5th December.

The older brother of Taymoor, Tayyab, told Telegraph & Argus: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Taymoor, who tragically left us at the young age of 19. On the early morning of Wednesday, December 4th, Taymoor passed away, leaving a void in the hearts of those who loved him.”

Tayyab went on to explain how his younger brother was incredibly selfless: “He was the youngest of four siblings and cherished by his family. He was known for his kindness and willingness to help others, always putting everyone else first.”

Adding that he was a committed student but had many passions, Tayyab said: “Taymoor was a dedicated student at the University of York, where he was pursuing his passion for cybersecurity. A proud graduate of St Bede’s School in Bradford, he was the youngest of four siblings and cherished by his family.

“Taymoor had a passion for fashion, shoes and hair, and his vibrant personality shone through, making him popular and confident despite his vision challenges. Taymoor was a hard worker with dreams of travelling and was eagerly planning to go on Umrah with his mum.”

Taymoor was described as a shining and vibrant personality that made him “popular and confident despite his vision challenges.”

“He was close to all of his family, including those who lived far away, and was often spoiled by his siblings as the baby of the family.”

Tayyab added: “We are all shocked and heartbroken by this loss and are struggling to come to terms with it. Taymoor will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories we share. Further details for funerals and burial will be shared via Janaza Announcements.”

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said it is not believed that there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

York St John’s Pro Vice Chancellor for Education, Professor Richard Bourne, told The York Tab: “We were deeply saddened and shocked to learn of Taymoor’s sudden death. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Taymoor’s family, friends and everyone who knew him.”
