What are the mysterious white bags being dropped on Edinburgh’s Arthur’s Seat?
No, it’s not the ‘annual feeding’ of the Arthur’s Seat ‘haggis’
Edinburgh locals have flocked to social media to share their confusion after seeing low-flying helicopters transporting mysterious white objects to the top of Arthur’s Seat.
One Reddit user asked if anyone had ‘any clues’ to what the project was, prompting speculation that the development was part of a construction project to create new footpaths on the famous hike.
Other commenters provided humourous responses, citing the need to feed the “giant granite guzzling haggis” residing in the dormant volcano.
A confused resident said on X: “Went to [X] to find an answer to the mystery of Arthur’s seat and I’m now even more confused.
“It looks like a convoy of sheep is attempting to summit.”

Revealing the true reason behind the works, Historic Environments Scotland (HES), who are responsible for the management of Arthur’s Seat, told The Tab: “HES is currently undertaking works on the Zig Zag path in Holyrood Park, located on the western side of Arthur’s Seat.
“To facilitate these works, and due to the location of the site, stone deliveries were moved up onto Arthur’s Seat earlier this week via helicopter. Some localised access restrictions were in place to allow a safe working area for the team.
“The Zig Zag path will remain closed whilst works continue over the coming months, with park visitors being directed to use alternative paths to access the Summit.”
